This is a good question.

PrivateVPNs are not cheap, and it's not always clear how much of their infrastructure is on-premises versus hosted/cloud/managed services. So, it can be hard to tell just how many servers they have. However, I've taken a look at the top five of the list, which seem to indicate that all but one of the companies are using AWS infrastructure, and likely with a significant number of servers, at least a few dozen per plan, and perhaps more.

The number of servers that each server is using could be variable. For example, a company like PrivateVPN (which I have no connection to, other than having read about it) could be using just a couple of servers for all of their plans, but for some plans, such as their premium plans, that could be much higher. However, I'd bet that even their cheapest plan uses many more servers than 5 or 6, especially since they have to maintain and manage so many servers. However, it does give a good idea of how many servers they have, and that they are large enough to be able to spin up new servers or migrate servers, if needed.

So, the number of servers per server plan may vary. However, I'd wager that the number of servers per plan tends to be higher than 5. At minimum, every server plan that we have listed as part of this list has at least 1 server. If you look at the top ten of the list (top five per plan), you can see a couple of companies with 2-4 per server, and most others have at least 1 server per server plan.

As a side note, although they don't say what server hardware they are running, I believe I'd expect them to be running Windows Server based systems, and most likely x86 based processors, but if they were using other types of server hardware, that would count as well. Again, I've no connection to them, but they have done a good job of maintaining their servers so that they don't have to be run out of hours. I have no reason to doubt that.

As someone who's lived in Europe for the past five years, living in Berlin, and had a number of different personal (non-business) use VPNs, I have only had trouble with one VPN in that time and a few of them have even been more or less useless. The problem with PrivateVPN is their user friendlyness and the way they allow you to create your own PrivateVPN.

I've spent many, many hours playing with my account online and offline, so I can confidently say that the product is really easy to use, intuitive and straightforward to master. It does have its flaws, but at the moment it looks like a service that is definitely worth giving a try, especially since it is relatively cheap. That may sound like a contradiction, but it is a cheap service, not only in terms of quality, but also in terms of pricing. While the service is not cheap by any means, it's very, very affordable.
