Is Gone Home free?

It's been free for a few hours now, but the price is still 14.

99 on Steam.

Gone Home offers so much in such a tiny package. The story is funny and charming and weird, and it's one of those stories you'll find yourself wanting to read more of after you've finished it, even though you won't know why.

But, to be clear, Gone Home isn't actually that little, because there's a lot packed in there. In the opening cutscene, you're introduced to us to your character, siblings Aidan and Ella Dover, with some quick exposition about what their family was like in the old house. We meet your characters first, before you arrive. We meet them again as you explore the house. And we see them grow in the story, while you get to go through a series of challenges throughout the game that reveal what's going on in their lives as a result of the mystery you stumble across in the house.

And, at the end, we learn a lot more about the pair's family and the people around them. As is the case for a lot of great narrative experiences, it's all delivered by some truly fantastic voice acting and really great sound effects. There's a really impressive audio demo available on Steam, which showcases all of the sound design. It's incredibly well done.

The house itself, too, feels like a true home - from the wooden floorboards, to the dusty books on the shelves. The music swells, when you enter the old-fashioned library, and then, as you go deeper, it becomes slower and more somber. It's a beautiful and appropriate place for a great story to be told.

Is Gone Home a horror game?

Or a survival game?

Or a psychological thriller? Maybe a little of all three?

It's difficult to tell if the first person exploration game is a horror game, because the developers are coy about what kind of game it is. But even so, Gone Home is a brilliant game that's worth your time.

After completing its story, you'll find yourself wondering about your purpose in life. Why am I doing this? What should I be doing? What kind of person am I? What kind of person would I like to be? I enjoyed Gone Home a lot. I liked exploring the house and talking with the characters. I liked seeing the story develop. But what I found most fascinating was what it told me about myself, how it exposed my emotional weaknesses and my hidden strengths.

Like any good novel, it forces us to look inside ourselves to find our own answers. But the main lesson is that the real answers to these questions aren't found in the game itself, but in the world around us. How to play Gone Home. Gone Home is set in the present day, but the world around us is an amalgam of past and present. The people we meet and the events that take place in the game are drawn from the world we live in, but their context is a combination of the people and things we see every day.

This isn't just a gimmick - the world of the game is much more than just a pretty veneer over the story. It's a living, breathing thing.

In Gone Home, you play as a teenage girl called Katie, who recently returned to her hometown of Gable Street to help her mother, who has fallen on hard times. The first thing she discovers is that her home is a wreck. Her mother has been trying to make a go of it on her own, but she's clearly struggling.

The house has become a prison for her mother. She spends all her time locked up in her room, playing video games and avoiding the neighbors.

After coming home from school one day, Katie discovers a letter from her father that explains his absence for the last year. He's been in Europe for business, but when he comes home, he'll be forced to move back into Gable Street.

How much is Gone Home on Steam?

Gone Home is a game about exploring the memories of a deceased family.

How much will you pay for it? The answer is: as much as you want to. Yes, this is true. We know it sounds weird and we're not trying to hide anything.

When Gone Home was originally released in February of 2023, it sold just shy of 8,000 copies on Steam. It's an indie title, after all, and Steam has a lot of indies.

For comparison, the next most popular indie title on Steam at the time was Braid, which sold around 16,000 copies. There are a lot of indies on Steam.

But things changed very quickly. Over the summer, the game enjoyed a huge surge of attention thanks to the controversy surrounding the game's ending. We had a big story about it in PC Gamer, a huge write-up on Kotaku, and a massive surge in sales.

Today, two years later, the game has well over 40,000 copies. And that's thanks to multiple Steam Specials. If you haven't played it, what are you waiting for?

(And before anyone asks, yes, it is possible to download the game free of charge. But that's not what the Steam Specials are for.)

So, what does Gone Home cost on Steam? Let's find out. First, let's check the regular price.99, which is exactly the same on Steam. What about the Humble Bundle discount? Nothing. There are no discounts on Steam.

I did some quick digging, and came across this article by Valve employee Chris Plerou. As best as I can tell, this appears to be the official policy on Steam: We try not to offer special deals because they often don't work out for a lot of titles.
