How much selenium should I take daily for thyroid?
I am a 30 yr old female.
I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's in 2023. I have been on Armour thyroid and selenium for 4 years now. Recently I started a low dose of 50 mcg of Selenium daily. I have read that if I want to get the most from my selenium supplements, I should take 1.5 grams daily. How much Selenium should I take? Should I be taking any other supplements?
Responses (10). I'm sorry to hear you are having problems, not being able to make enough thyroid hormone is no fun. I'm not sure how your doctor is monitoring you with Armour, but this dose will most likely be just fine. I wouldn't recommend anything more than that for a healthy individual.
Thank you so much. In my case my doctor is not monitoring me with Armour, he used to monitor me with Armour but then I started testing my TSH and it was under 4 so he did not want to use Armour anymore and he changed me to Euthyrox. Thanks for your reply. What dosage of Armour are you using? My current dose is 2mg daily. Responses (1). Thanks for the response. I took my first dose of Selenium in June. I am having problems with the absorption of Armour. My doctor has increased my dosage to 3 mg. I take 1.5 mg of Selenium daily. He thinks my thyroid function tests are improving.
How much selenium is needed for Hashimoto's?
I'm a 30 year old male who has been diagnosed with Hashimoto's for the last 6 years.
I've tried to take the recommended dosage of Selenium, which is 50 mcg per day and it is very hard to find in Canada (only available from Europe). I've been taking it every day without any changes or other side effects. It's not my choice of meds but my condition keeps getting worse. Should I change the dosage?

50 mcg per day is a low dose. The dose of Selenium needed by patients with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's is 25-150 mcg per day. Your thyroid functions should be checked at least every six months.
Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's Disease.
You probably are on the lower end of the dose for the dose of Selenium needed for Hypothyroidism, or maybe a combination of lower thyroid hormone levels and high thyroid antibodies. The best way to judge how much Selenium you need would be to take your lab work, total T4, free T4, TSH, and thyroid antibodies and calculate the dose of selenium that needs to be taken. It is easy to over dose on Selenium, but can cause severe, sometimes life-threatening side effects.
It is possible that an adjustment in thyroid medications, such as higher dose of Levothyroxine (Eltroxin), or use of supplemental T3 or rT3 would beneficial in reversing the underlying disease process. How Much Selenium is Needed? March 13th, 2023. }

What is the best type of selenium to take?
Selenium is an important trace element and antioxidant that occurs in numerous different forms in nature.
It has been used for over 100 years as a supplement to aid the body's health. Selenium can be taken in a dietary supplement form, or as a dietary supplement that provides selenium from a yeast-derived supplement.
Selenium may help lower blood pressure and cholesterol by stimulating production of nitric oxide by the body. Selenium has also been shown to lower heart disease risk and certain cancers and may even play a role in male infertility.
Selenium works with other antioxidants like vitamin C, vitamin E, copper, zinc and vitamins A and B6 to prevent harmful free radicals from forming inside the body. Selenium has been shown to be effective at lowering triglycerides, cholesterol, homocysteine levels, lowering LDL-C (bad cholesterol) and increasing HDL-C (good cholesterol). Some research has shown that taking selenium may not lower your risk of heart disease at all, and in fact may be harmful when taken in high doses. This means that it is imperative to look closely at the type of selenium being used in your selenium supplement and how you are taking it. In this article, I will compare between three of the most popular selenium supplements and then discuss the importance of understanding the type of selenium you are taking and the way in which you are taking it. What Is Selenium? Selenium is a trace element in the minerals group. It is an essential nutrient and can be found naturally in some foods, such as Brazil nuts and seafood.
Selenium does not have an essential function in the body, but in small amounts is known to enhance the immune system, protect the brain and thyroid gland, reduce the risk of certain cancers, lower risk of heart disease, and help reduce the risk of certain forms of cataracts. According to a 2023 study published in the journal JAMA, taking supplemental selenium may help maintain lean muscle mass, and may benefit older adults who take it to prevent muscle loss that can occur naturally as we age. It is worth noting that the amount of selenium your body needs varies depending on factors like your age and sex, health conditions and lifestyle factors such as whether you exercise. Your daily requirements are not necessarily the same as those of younger or more active individuals.
