Are there side effects to taking selenium?

What is selenium and what is it used for? Selenium is an essential trace mineral. It's found in the soil, food, and water that we drink. Selenium is responsible for over 100 enzymes in the body. Our selenium levels will often decrease with age. This is considered healthy because it helps maintain balance in our systems.
Selenium provides antioxidant activity, which protects our bodies from free radicals. This is the main cause of many diseases like cancer. However, it doesn't necessarily mean that taking selenium would necessarily cause disease. For example, eating organic apples every day may keep a person healthier than eating non-organic apples. The apple will not be any more nutritious than a non-organic apple, but you're less likely to be sick.
I started with one teaspoon of selenium powder added into my diet after my doctor recommended it. My GP said this was a safe way to get it into my body. She suggested doing this for just a few weeks. I tried starting with only one teaspoon of selenium a day. Then I increased to two teaspoons a day, and then four teaspoons a day.
This eventually worked up to eight teaspoons of selenium a day, depending on how much water I was drinking. By the end of the trial, I had no problems and my skin was clear. My selenium levels were within normal range.
However, the more selenium I took, the more uncomfortable I was to begin with. My lips began to turn white and itchy. I also felt really hungry. My appetite would suddenly get really high. My digestion was terrible, even when I wasn't eating too much. So the first few days were actually the worst. I got the most energy out of eating! I'd eat all day long, even though I didn't want to.
The good thing was that I felt so much better at the end of the trial. My skin looked healthier and my energy levels were restored. My digestive system was better as well. When I finished, I was almost back to my normal state. However, even after ending the trial, I still felt different and had to use a lot of soap to clean myself when bathing.
Can selenium improve thyroid function?
By now you know that most people are deficient in selenium and that it's important for a healthy immune system, thyroid function and hair growth.
But is there any real scientific evidence that selenium alone can improve thyroid function and reverse hair loss? Or could the benefits of improving selenium levels because of other factors involved? Yes, for a very important reason: I said earlier that selenium doesn't do much on its own. However, I can tell you that it has absolutely no effect at all on hair loss or on thyroid disorders, regardless of what the manufacturers of selenium-containing hair products will have you believe.
In fact, many supplements - with which some people mistakenly treat themselves as if they can 'reverse' thyroid or hair-related problems - contain synthetic forms of hormones, which is a major factor for thyroid disorder and hair loss in the first place. Let me show you how.
Thyroid diseases and selenium deficiency: Where does selenium play a part? A study published in 2024 tested the effects of various dietary supplements on thyroid function, selenium and zinc in rats. The investigators found a significant negative correlation between thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and selenium intake when comparing control rats to those given supplements (the same ones that made the rats healthier in terms of hair and heart and immune health) that contained no selenium. In one instance, they also saw an increase in TSH caused by a high dose of selenium, although it disappeared within just 30 minutes. This means that supplements containing no selenium are detrimental to rat thyroid function.
According to a 2024 article in Thyroid, the only benefit of selenium seems to be for "nutritional deficiencies" - but is selenium effective at combating hypothyroidism? I was unable to find any peer-reviewed medical studies supporting this claim, so we'll have to wait until someone takes a closer look at the issue. However, I'm not worried: even the worst forms of selenium supplements on the market don't cause your TSH levels to go anywhere near zero.
Does selenium help with belly fat?
I am 26 years old, 5'4 tall and weigh about 130 pounds. I have been on a low calorie diet for the past 4 months (1000 calories a day) and have lost 20 pounds but have no belly fat. My girlfriend told me that she has heard that you can get rid of belly fat by taking selenium. I know how to do crunches, planks and other exercises but I really need help with my belly fat. I have always had a large belly but the last 2 weeks my belly has gotten bigger. I am thinking that if I take selenium it might help me get rid of that extra belly fat. Is this true?

Selenium is known for its ability to support thyroid function. In this way, it would be expected to support weight loss. I don't believe that selenium itself is an effective weight loss agent. Rather, it is a co-factor in the thyroid hormone. Selenium deficiency can cause an increase in thyroid hormone, which is not necessarily a good thing. Also, there are numerous foods that contain selenium that aren't even considered to be very high in selenium. If you take selenium supplements, make sure you get selenium from a source that is "organic." There is some evidence that suggests that organic selenium is better absorbed than selenium from a non-organic source.
