How do I find obfuscated servers in NordVPN?
If your connection to a NordVPN server has been tampered with, it is often an indication that the server you are connecting to is using an 'obfuscated' DNS address. The server's DNS address is hidden from the server administrator and is only viewable by VPN users if they have some sort of special client that works in conjunction with the server's internal DNS. These clients are called DNS proxies or DNS tunnels.
You should never connect to 'obfuscated' servers as they will compromise your security. However, if you are not sure about a server being secure and you are still connected to it anyway, then it can be useful to find out what obfuscated server you are connected to. There are many methods for finding out what DNS proxy a NordVPN server is using but each method will work differently. Some you can do yourself and some take quite a while. Here are some of the different methods to finding obfuscated servers:
Method 1 - Use IP2location website to find the server's IP. Using IP2Location is an easy way to find out what obfuscated server you are connected to if you can easily find the VPN server's IP address. Simply input the server's DNS address in the text box and click the 'Find Server' button.
The IP Address of your NordVPN server should appear in the results. If it is obfuscated, it will show as something like this 192.168.0.101 instead of an IP address.
You may also be able to discover more information on the server such as the location of the VPN server, the country of the server, etc from the results. By visiting the IP Address in a web browser, the user will be able to see what kind of VPN server is using it and it will give a hint on whether it is a secure one. In our example the IP address is located in a US Military base, which makes it seem like a potentially insecure server to use, but it may not be. We have tested IP2location against our VPN server and it does work well, but to get more information you will need to perform more research.
If you run into issues when attempting this method, ensure that your IP address is properly entered into the form (ex. The leading dash should be removed).
