How do I bypass school restrictions on Chromebook?

As Chromebook has become the standard school and office computer, it has caused a stir in schools who are trying to limit usage. There have been many reports that parents may not want their children accessing inappropriate websites at school, and this is certainly true. However, the problem is compounded by the fact that the majority of these Chromebooks may not be set up for parental control.

Schools have often tried to stop children from running applications and accessing certain websites on the ChromeOS machines in the past. Schools could install web filters, either on the device or on the network, but this only worked in limited circumstances. This was because the Chrome Apps available through the Chrome Web Store did not abide by web filtering policies.

If you are the administrator of a school or school district, this can be an extremely useful solution as most other vendors will not allow their software to be filtered or restricted on a Chromebook device. In short, Google has made it far too easy for schools to block out the most objectionable content from the internet.

However, schools must be aware that if they limit access to content on the WebStore, including content that parents want their children to have access to, then they are going against the TOS of the Chrome Web Store. Parents may be unhappy about the fact that certain sites or content is being blocked.

There are also a number of other reasons why schools should not block out access to the Chrome Web Store. The apps are built in Java or JavaScript and these apps are sandboxed in terms of what they can do. The ability for schools to restrict them is very limited. So if a teacher needs to download an app and teach a class, they cannot use the Chrome web store for reasons that are not related to technical restriction.

The ability for schools to run web filtering software is now very limited because these apps cannot be controlled by the administrator. As mentioned above, there is not usually any technical restrictions, they just cannot be trusted.

We would strongly suggest that schools and school districts be wary of the restrictions that Google is imposing on the ChromeWeb Store. It could potentially be an issue that will cause headaches for years to come and in particular, there is a big question as to whether the Google TOS prohibits this type of use.

In short, blocking the WebStore apps is not allowed in the spirit of the webstore and, to be perfectly clear, no software is technically blocked.

How do I remove an administrator from my school Chromebook?

I know this is a ridiculous question, but I am trying to remove an administrator from my school Chromebook. I have a Google Apps for Education account. I have been given a username and password for an admin user in my school. The username I am using is not mine. I have tried logging in using this account, but I get a red screen and the username and password does not work.

I have also tried logging in with a different account, but when I try to access the user's account page it is giving me the error message: "The username or password you entered is invalid." I have tried logging in using a different email address as well, but I get the same error. How do I remove this administrator from my school Chromebook? I was in a similar situation but the admin wasn't even listed. He was just listed as another administrator and they just put in my login info for him. It was actually easier to just change my user name and delete everything he had done on my account.

If your admin account doesn't work, then you might need to reset your password by going to the Chrome Web Store, clicking on Reset Password, and following the prompts. However, since the account doesn't work, you'll have to contact Google for help.

If you want to get rid of the administrator, you can go to your account settings (under the gear icon), then choose Accounts. From there, you'll be able to select and delete that particular account. However, you won't be able to access any other Google products that were associated with that account.

If you want to keep the administrator, I'd suggest contacting your school's IT department. They should be able to help you with this.

Sorry, I'm still a bit confused. I tried the link you provided and I don't see how to delete an administrator. In addition, I am not able to see my own account page and the username and password I was using to log in don't work.

I have checked my settings.

How do I bypass Chromebook password?

Recently I have noticed that when I connect my HP Chromebook to my wireless network using the browser, the chrome will try to log-in using an HP server, after which it fails to log in and takes me to an HP password page. It also tells me "The computer needs to sleep, but you can't close it".

I've been googling this for a long time now and can't seem to find a solution on how to bypass the HP web-login feature so that my machine can join my wireless network. 1 Answer.
A quick and dirty fix is to run in terminal and type: chmod 0666 /dev/nvram. And then unplug/plug in your AC power cable. This is a temporary fix only if you are unable to reset your settings like wifi passwords. Unfortunately you have to be able to access the terminal on the computer to see any messages. If you don't have a terminal prompt, it is difficult to fix things as it's been pointed out before.

This will clear all the information saved in the nvram file which should then prompt you to set the wifi password again. Now to reset the nvram file to its default state: You can read more about the nvram file here. Note that I am no longer running a laptop with Linux nor do I own a Chromebook, I just know there is a file called nvram in Linux and that's where they put their passwords and other configurations. You can also do this in Windows as well.

@mfk77 As I don't have access to another computer to test out, the only way to test it would be to plug/unplug the power. It should automatically reboot so your WiFi should be working again. If it didn't, you can also open terminal and type:

Sudo reboot -h now. That will do the same thing. Hopefully it will work. If it doesn't you can always edit the file yourself but I wouldn't know where exactly to place it as I haven't been using linux for many years.

Google Schools uses automated systems to help identify and verify courses students take from other providers. Do your courses have points or do you have to actually sit for the test and pass? I only took the test once and my scores came up very low and I was required to re-take the test. Which would have been a real hardship and a waste of time as it turned out. I passed on the 2nd try and my scores were very high.
