Is Aloha browser free?
Does it contain spyware? Which mobile browser is best for Windows? How do you save money by switching from IE to Firefox? Here are answers to your frequently asked questions.
When we asked you about which browser you use on your computers, you overwhelmingly preferred Firefox over Chrome, Internet Explorer, Opera, and Safari.e. You used the word overwhelmingly a lot there. It's been almost three years since that survey, though, so let's get to the second question: does the free Aloha browser from the folks behind Opera contain adware and spyware?
A very small number of Internet users have reported spyware in Opera in recent years, but it's usually a handful of instances out of hundreds of millions. (The company claims a malware database search gets about 1.6 million hits a month.) I suspect that the numbers haven't changed all that much because spyware makers are good at making their software appear to be innocuous in order to get it installed on computers. And if anyone has any other examples, they're welcome to let us knowwe don't pretend to have comprehensive coverage here.

We ran a simple scan of Aloha using our own adware detection tool, which finds adware about an hour per computer. There were a couple suspicious things, including an apparently malicious ad in Safari that was also found to have adware when the same computer is searched with Google. The adware found here would likely have allowed ad and tracking servers to track your browsing habits and send them to advertisers. However, these were isolated instances and are unlikely to matter in the long run. We didn't find any malware in Aloha.
Here are some of the highlights of the test: IE came out clean in this test. We had no problems running a test or seeing ads.
I think it's fair to say that you are safe if you use Internet Explorer. Ad and tracking servers that you visit aren't sending back any of your browsing history or other information to third parties.
Opera Mobile 11.60 The new version of Opera Mobile had a few unusual items. The company claimed not to use any Web services when we asked about advertising.
