What is the Mullvad controversy?
Mullvad: It's really simple.
We are a free software organisation that helps internet users access to a wide range of free services. All our servers are in Sweden and are run by civil servants paid by the Swedish state. However, as some people now, we are also offering our services to organisations who wants to offer their services free to the public, and who would like to pay our salaries.
What is Mullvad's purpose? We exist to provide free internet connectivity. That's our whole mission. I have written an essay about what Mullvad means for democracy, check it out if you are interested.
But I thought all VPN providers offer "free" internet access? They do. But when I started Mullvad, I realised that it's not enough to offer internet access free to your own citizens. No government will make laws to protect people's privacy if they think they can get away with spying on them. So you need someone else to spy on them for you, and it seems to me that no one but governments themselves would be able to accomplish that.
And so, Mullvad is a company that protects people's privacy. Mullvad is a network of independent organisations. We are not connected to any private individuals, unlike some VPN services. The Mullvad network consists of volunteers which is a good thing as long as their motives are truly independent, and there is an actual point to supporting everyone behind the server network, because no individual has a motive to attack them.
We work closely with Wikileaks to keep people safe. They were already using an Icelandic server at Wikileaks.org as a backup in case their US host was taken down or taken by the Feds.
When we discovered that the secret Swedish internet police (SIP) were trying to force ISPs in Sweden to use certain DNS servers for censorship by sending letters to ISPs threatening them if they didn't comply. It seems obvious that this Swedish ISP spying was ordered from the very top of the Swedish political leadership. The way we see it, the police, the justice minister and the government is one large machine. We believe that it is time for people to take back the internet. So as Mullvad we decided to help Wikileaks and other websites to stay online by moving to Sweden instead of trying to fight with the censorship machine.
Is Mullvad better than NordVPN?
Mullvad is a company that focuses on providing censorship-resistant VPN access and that uses a novel DNS service instead of a traditional central VPN server.
NordVPN does not appear to be any better than the other VPN companies out there. NordVPN provides you with more customer support options (such as webinars) than most VPNs, and that's really about it.
The best free VPN providers. These are all the VPNs I recommend for most people. However, I only recommend free VPNs when I can't find a better alternative. If you need reliable VPN access, then you should read my best VPN reviews and best VPN services reviews instead. You might also want to try our best VPN services article if you want to compare VPN services or check which VPN has a kill switch.
What about encryption? I would recommend using at least 256-bit encryption. This usually means using OpenVPN or an OpenVPN plus IPSec VPN. Most VPNs do not offer OpenVPN, but OpenVPN Plus allows you to use the OpenVPN protocol plus IPSec to protect your data.
The only downside of OpenVPN is that it often uses port 443 and port 995 as default ports. These ports are well-known for a number of reasons: they're widely used, often by legitimate services, and also can be quite useful for testing. However, these ports are usually monitored by governments so it's best to either make sure your service has no other connections, or that it is only listening on those ports in the first place.
Also, your data may be encrypted at the server level so you shouldn't need to worry about it. There's more about why you should use at least OpenVPN at What Should I Use for Encryption? How can I be sure a VPN provider will keep my data safe? No VPN provider will keep your data safe unless you're absolutely sure that you trust the company. The most obvious way you can find out if you can trust a VPN provider is by checking their privacy policy and whether they actually respect your privacy. You might also want to check if they have good security practices, as a number of VPN providers don't bother protecting their data and could potentially leak it to attackers. I've also listed more trustworthy VPN companies in our VPN roundup.
You can also get a VPN with a kill switch so that it disconnects when something goes wrong.

You can use Mullvad for free.
However, we cannot guarantee that Mullvad will not block or censor your traffic at any time. Your subscription will be terminated if you are found to have been using Mullvad for free.
However, we can guarantee that your subscription will not be terminated if you use Mullvad as anonymizing proxy. You can use Mullvad for free, and for your protection we will never try to collect any personal information about you from Mullvad. The best way to protect your privacy is to use Mullvad as a proxy in your internet connection. You can use the "proxyswitch" tool to change your internet connection to Mullvad's IP address instead of your ISPs. The easiest way to install and use the Proxyswitch tool is through the Firefox browser: go to (this page is made specifically for Firefox and will open in your browser). enter the URL of your ISP into the first field. enter the port number of your internet connection into the second field. if you wish, you can click on the "Show all proxies" button to show all of Mullvad's servers, and select one to use. You can also use the Proxyswitch tool on any other operating system that supports Firefox. Using the Proxyswitch tool will be much more secure than manually changing your internet connection, as it allows you to choose any of Mullvad's many servers and automatically connects you to it. Unfortunately, it is not possible to use the Proxyswitch tool in the Opera browser. If you choose to use the Proxyswitch tool, you will need to restart your internet connection after the change. This is because the Proxyswitch tool changes your internet connection from your ISP to a server chosen by you. Therefore, you need to restart your internet connection to make sure that you are connected to the new server.
In addition, Mullvad does not provide any service to your computer directly. In order to use Mullvad, you need to connect your computer to the internet using Mullvad's servers.
Therefore, you cannot use Mullvad to host any files or services on your computer.
