Does Windows 10 support PPTP?

How do I connect to PPTP on Windows?

I am running Windows 7, and I have a VPN set up on my router (D-Link, DWL-G122). I can connect to the router with PPTP/RAS. But when I turn on my computer, it never connects. When I open a terminal and type in "pptpsetup", it says "PPTPD is not running". When I type "ping www.google.com" from terminal, it takes around 3-5 seconds to respond. When I click on the button on the router for the computer, it asks for a username and password. When I type my router's password, it just says "Access denied". Is there something wrong with my router? Do I need a specific program to use PPTP? I am new to Linux so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You do not need to change or edit the files under /etc - that will break your OS - I always use the graphical interface that is built into ubuntu. So open a terminal and type gksudo - in the future you should use that to make sure you are running commands as root. If you're really worried about security you can change the ownership of those folders, but it really isn't necessary to do so.

Do you know what vpns are good for, and which one is best for your environment? I currently use Freevpn because I am a student at the local uni.e. I want to be able to access my home network while at school, etc. However, I can't get the vpn to work. Can someone please help me?

First off, are you using the correct settings for your VPN? Is the tunnel being established correctly? Is your computer connected directly to the modem and router? Is your modem and router properly configured to send and receive data? If your modem is correctly configured, then we need to look into what might be causing your issue. The problem may be your router; this is where the most problems happen for people. Check your router settings and make sure they are correct. Also, check the ports on your router and ensure you are connected to the right ports. Are you connected with DHCP? Are you properly assigning the IP to the computer?

If you are running Windows 7, then the built in VPN client is not compatible with PPTP - you will need to use third party software for it.
