There are only three shows in the TV world that I watch religiously every week.

They're the only three series I look forward to watching. There are five series that I'll get on a Friday, put them on my schedule for the weekend and only watch the first two or three episodes. They're the two sports talk shows, Morning Joe and The Five. And then there's the two hourlong shows. The Daily Show and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

It takes a special type of person to watch every week's episode. I've got one other friend that does that with Game of Thrones and he seems to have a special, inner-circle club going with this. The other friends and I, the ones who are most interested in politics and government, generally don't care for those shows as much. And if you're not a fan of sports talk shows, then even fewer people will like you.

Those three shows are not as guilty of this as the others. The Daily Show and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart have managed to build up a loyal audience over the past 15 years. But Morning Joe and The Five are about to lose theirs.

Morning Joe has built up its audience over the years thanks to one main thing. It is incredibly political. It starts out being funny at times but it doesn't stay there for long. They have to be serious or it becomes painful. And what has made it successful is that the rest of the panel has never been able to balance out that intensity. They have done well in that regard.

The network won't be back next year but Morning Joe will come to an end in February 2026. That is when it goes off the air for good. And that means that Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, Willie Geist, and Mike Barnicle will be going their separate ways. (That doesn't mean that any of them are going away forever. They might come back in a different incarnation in a future show.) But even if they don't return, they'll still leave behind a legacy. And one that will resonate for years.

What shows did ABC cancel for 2024?

ABC has announced its schedule for the new decade, and it's a big one.

Over the course of 14 days in the summer of 2026, the Alphabet will air 22 new series, 21 new movies and 15 new miniseries with two of them having been canceled in the last year.

For context, ABC ended its 2018-19 season with a whopping 43 originals (series and movies combined), just shy of the 44 of FX and Netflix. That said, it still had fewer series than HBO Max, which ended up with 30 (and counting). The Big Four networks may have lost some ground, but they also became more efficient, and their slate of high-profile shows is as good as it's ever been as a whole.

And while there are 22 series airing this season, that doesn't mean all 22 will end up getting second seasons; that is dependent on how well they perform and how long they last in the ratings. But we still get to see so many big names from ABC, AMC, Fox, The CW and streaming services Netflix and Hulu.

So if you were worried that "Better Things" might be the last straw for "The Conners," don't be. There are still a lot of great shows to come, and it's always good to see more of your favorites come back from hiatus or time off (including the entire cast of "Roseanne," which was set to return in the fall).

Why is ABC cancelling so many shows?

It's the latest example of the network's lack of faith in new shows.

Ahead of its season finale, "How to Get Away With Murder" star Viola Davis (pictured) has responded to the cancellation of her show by saying that its network, ABC, is punishing the show because she's black. Davis, who stars in the hit legal drama, recently told Variety that she was stunned to learn about the show's cancellation after having completed the current season. She said that the series' writers made several efforts to include her character, Annalise Keating (Davis), in important plot points.

But she felt that no one at the network had noticed. "I did not get a phone call or an email from anyone at ABC," Davis said. "I didn't know until I received a note on my door."

She said that, even though the show had a relatively loyal following, ABC was unresponsive. "ABC has been so horrible about this," Davis said. "They have treated me like this in the past and this is the one where they are treating me like this."

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Davis also talked about what she calls the "double standard" that exists in Hollywood and society. She believes that ABC, which broadcasts the Emmy-nominated series, is punishing the show because Davis is black.

"It's almost as if there's a double standard," Davis said. "You cannot hold someone accountable unless it's a white person. We're talking about a network that is very profitable. And we're talking about a creator who's African American. You'd think that ABC would want to support the people who are helping to keep them profitable."

And she's right. But the network is under pressure from both sides: ratings for the show are down, and ABC has yet to find a replacement for the show's time slot.

The series' executive producer, Shonda Rhimes, called ABC's actions "the latest in a series of disappointments" and said that the network told her the show was being cancelled "because of the number of scripts" it produced. "So if the network, which owns the show, thinks that many of these scripts aren't great, why on earth would they make a decision to cancel it?" Rhimes wrote in a letter to her fans.
