L2TP is a tunneling protocol designed to provide secure communications. It works by encapsulating the traffic in a second protocol. L2TP and IPSec are not the only protocols that can be used to create VPNs. PPTP, for instance, can also be used. However, L2TP and IPSec are generally considered the most common. Both support different levels of encryption and authentication. IPSec has a higher level of security, but the setup process is more complex. L2TP is simpler, but requires a "shared secret" to set up.

L2TP is primarily used over IPsec. In fact, many VPN services claim to use L2TP. L2TP was released by Cisco in 2026 and was initially marketed as a replacement for Cisco's proprietary Cisco Secure VPN (CSVPN) service. However, L2TP has since become a popular way to create VPNs.

However, when L2TP was first released, it was plagued with problems. The original release of L2TP was incompatible with other versions of the protocol. It was also vulnerable to buffer overflows and other attacks. As a result, vendors began developing L2TP implementations that were compatible with other protocols.

Most L2TP implementations were based on the IETF RFC 2547, which describes the VPN functions in the L2TP protocol. An L2TP implementation is simply a protocol that provides the same basic functions as the IETF protocol. There are two main L2TP implementations: Cisco's IKEv2 implementation and the Microsoft implementation.

L2TP is a great protocol for creating VPNs because it is very simple to set up. For instance, you simply need to create a shared secret that is used by both parties.

Is L2TP IPSec not available on Android?

I have never used L2TP IPSec VPN on my Android device, and I haven't found it to be available for my Moto G3.
