What is HTTP proxy used for?

In the past I've built some proxy servers, so that they're ready for when I need them. I'm considering switching over to using Nginx for my servers instead, and I'm wondering if I should keep the proxy setup or not. It seems that Nginx has very few configuration options compared to Apache, so that means that you have fewer choices, but it also means that it's easier to set up. It also has a lazy-mode which means that it does some caching, but not all. Some people are scared of using Nginx, as I understand it. On the one hand, I'm not convinced that Nginx is really ready for production yet. On the other hand, it's a lot easier to use than Apache. I've used both, and while I'm pretty sure that I could get comfortable with Nginx, I still prefer to use Apache. I'd like to know what people think. Do you keep your proxy servers on or off? That said, I prefer to set it up and forget it. If I'm going to need to be able to troubleshoot issues with it, then I go through the effort of setting it up. If I don't need to do that, I set it up and forget it.

For the most part, the reason that I've been having problems getting people to stop asking me about my setup is that I don't really answer their questions. I've learned that it's easier to just put up a static page that says I don't have a public facing web server. You'll need to find another source for information.
