Is there a web version of Signal app?

I'm looking for a web version of Signal, the Android messaging app.

I use it as a way to stay in touch with people without having to pull out my phone. Is there an equivalent?

I'm not aware of one, but you can use a webapp called Signal Desktop (which also lets you use the Android app on your computer) to communicate via webchat. You could also use the Google Talk app which is basically the same thing as Signal Desktop and it's webchat.

How to find someone on Signal?

If you're looking for someone on Signal (the anonymity app that has more than 80 million users), the first thing to remember is that Signal was built to be decentralized and anonymous by default. This means that it uses only a public web of trust and public key cryptography, meaning there are no central servers or logs that have the power to reveal your identity. It works like a distributed social network in which everyone holds some portion of the private keys. This means that you can't send a message without the consent of the other participants. In order to do this, Signal requires your phone number. It's how you create an account.

Finding someone on Signal can be difficult because there are hundreds of millions of users. You don't want to stalk them though. The best way to locate someone is to use Signal's messaging history and look through their messages with you. Signal stores everything that's exchanged by each person on Signal on the network. The only private information that you need to look at is the recipient of the messages.

Let's take the example of John Doe, using their Signal username. When you start searching for him on the Signal website, you enter his name in the search for section and you search. The next step would be to use the Search Results section to see all the matches, but there's a big problem with it: It shows only one match.

If you want to look at more results, you'll need to open each result, which could take hours, days, or even weeks. That's why some people use desktop clients or search apps that let you search anonymously. These clients help you search the Signal network to find the right recipient.

Using the Signal Desktop client. The Signal Desktop client has a lot of features that you can use. It allows you to search for all the users who have the same phone number as yours, so you won't find yourself on the wrong account, which happens in many search apps. Another feature is that you can check if a user is online or offline. With Signal Desktop, you can even share contacts directly from its search results and search for phone numbers in your contacts. If you're using a desktop, the desktop client is essential.

How do I update my Signal version?

The Signal version that shipped with the latest software available on Signal's official site when you created your account is no longer supported and does not receive updates.

Please note that this may result in your signal account being temporarily locked or in some circumstances, removed from Signal. You can update your account using the steps below.

Update your Signal desktop app. If your phone or mobile app is set to automatic update as recommended, your Signal desktop app will be updated within hours of updating. You'll have to download the latest version of your desktop app from the Download section (), or click here to download it manually. Click through any warnings about installing updates. Wait until you see the new version of Signal Desktop in the list of installed apps in Settings, then click Install. If you don't see your desktop app in Settings, please make sure your desktop app is selected for updates (see above). Then re-launch the desktop app. It should download its latest version automatically, allowing you to continue with step 3.

Signal Desktop is built with Electron, a well known library for cross-platform desktop apps. Any Electron applications will update without fail, even if they were built from source. You can always use our Electron-built apps on macOS as a fallback if Signal Desktop fails. There is a small chance that Electron is updated on a more frequent basis than Signal Desktop. In which case, you can use the link provided to update Electron if needed.

This guide is for Electron 3.0+ Older versions might also be updated successfully via a different mechanism.

Signal Desktop is only available on macOS. Other Electron applications work across all platforms.

What platform do I use? The following instructions will help you find the correct link to use for your operating system. In most cases, we'll recommend the latest release published by Signal developers (currently v6.1).

Can I have two Signal accounts on one phone?

What are the rules around having two Signal accounts one phone? I have two phones, an iPhone X and a Huawei Honor 9. I want to use Signal on both phones but the phone number I registered with Signal is tied to the iPhone and I don't want to use it for the Honor 9. How do I use two Signal accounts one phone?

Yes, you can. In fact, you already have.

You must be using Signal on two devices (Android or iOS) at the same time to have two accounts. This is the only way to get two accounts.

You can have two accounts even if you just use one device. The only time it won't work is if you have two devices that use different Signal-compatible carriers, or if one device has a SIM that uses Signal but not the other. For example, if your iPhone uses T-Mobile while your Huawei uses AT&T, you cannot have two Signal accounts. If the two phones are on the same network, it works fine.

When the two phones are on the same network, they will share the same connection, so the Signal servers can see both phones. Since there is only one device using Signal, you will not be able to send messages to the other phone. If you tried, you'd see a message in the Messages app that says "This phone is not allowed to receive messages."
If you want to have two accounts, you need to use two devices at the same time, or use one device on two carriers.
