Can Google family link see text messages?
We all like to read text messages online.
We share pictures, share jokes, post on social media or share thoughts about where you ate. It's also a good place to find out how your friends and family are doing. How can we be sure when looking at someone's Google account whether the text messages were private? And can we get our hands on that data?
How does the search engine work with these messages? What are they storing? Why is it encrypted? And who needs access to that data? The search engine itself has had to face questions regarding this for years already, mostly around data collection and privacy. In 2024, they removed the functionality in Germany and Austria from their product, due to concerns of the general population. Even if you use DuckDuckGo, you might be under the assumption that you are more private than your search activity would otherwise have suggested.
But the big secret is the new version of their service, what they call family link. This is a search-based tool that allows two people to be linked together through a single Google account. When searching for something, such as a phone number, the other person's name pops up alongside yours, making it easy to see each other's phone numbers.
In theory, this means the link between the individuals goes one step further - Google searches and your own texts and mails will connect you both in the future. You won't only be able to share pictures anymore, but also information in the same way. But can Google see my past email messages?
What is Google's Family Link. First things first, let's get some clarity on what Family Link is. The service uses a single Google account between the two people and, depending on the privacy settings, Google will share information with those two, such as a Gmail account or even photos from Drive.
You can find the settings for it in Google settings. There is an option that allows an individual to connect with either a family member or friend. One can also choose whether these contacts are accessible by the search engine. Another interesting option is the option to use this feature when searching Google for someone who is not linked to you. The default setting is Off, meaning Google will search through their own databases and provide your query results.
Can my child turn off Family Link?
My daughter (5) is due to start school at the end of this month. I have registered for Family Link and now am wondering if she can turn off the service as we don't need it? We are living in Wrexham but will be travelling a lot, I know I can turn it off when I need to travel. I am having problems with this service, I would like to turn it off but I am worried that if I do I won't be able to get back to familylink. So my question is should I wait until my child starts school and then can turn it off or should I turn it off now? I want to use family link in order to get benefits from my daughter but I don't want to be without it when I need it. This is a difficult one for me - i'm the mum of 2 kids aged 7 and 3. They both have school lunches, so we have no need for family link. However, I do have an ongoing need to contact my husband every couple of days.
It was really great when I found out about family link, it really made life easier for me - and I could tell you were struggling, with all your questions! My advice would be to go to familylink.com and do some research - check it out.
I'm not sure if I can turn it off but I think I can. I will wait until I get sick of waiting for emails from my daughter. But I cant turn it off until I get her phone number to be sure she turns it off.
I have a 4 year old boy who has only just started school and my husband and I are expecting a baby boy in march. We have an active toddler at home and I want to make sure that we are all connected when we are living in different parts of the country. How do I go about doing this?
Hi

How do I use Google family app link?
First, you'll need to have your Android device's Google Play Store installed and enabled.
If you don't have it, go here to download and install it: Once that's installed, open the Play Store app and tap the Menu button (three horizontal lines) in the upper right hand corner, then select "My apps" to get to the main menu. Click on the Google Play link to get to the app's information page.
Select "Show as link" in the "Link" section at the top of the page, then copy the code at the bottom of that page (the one with the URL). Paste the URL into the family app's "Link" field.
