How do I set up RescueTime?
Steps to set up a free trial or full subscription to our cloud-based time-tracking service.
Download the RescueTime Windows client. Click "Get RescueTime". Select what you want to do (or go to the "Learn" tab): Start Free Trial. Free Trial starts in about 5 minutes and is limited to 3 days. During that time we'll keep track of everything you do on your computer. During the trial, the client will track every action you perform. It may seem obvious to you already, but it's pretty exciting to us how often you go back over actions you took just seconds earlier. All it takes is an honest effort to change the way you use technology.
You'll never see any time logs before you decide what type of subscription you want. Unsubscribe from the trial, or purchase the service: If you choose to continue with a free trial, you'll have access to all available features, time-tracked and otherwise. In this guide we'll provide recommendations as to what actions will work for your situation, but if you'd like to get deeper in to the options, use our support pages to reach out to a person for more assistance.
If you choose to purchase RescueTime Premium, you will gain access to all of the extra features. With many users experiencing a few days of productivity each month, that's about 100 days of productivity per year. That saves you so much more time than you can imagine and gets you where you want to go. Check our FAQ page to read more about the business plan and the different plans available.
You need a Mac to sign up for RescueTime On Your Mac. You'll need an Apple device. Macs, iPhones, iPads, and iPods aren't excluded. RescueTime works with any device, but for our purposes it'll be easier to use an iPhone or iPod touch. If you're on the fence and want to test it out with our demo version, read this guide, then you can sign up and get going with one click.
Mac Support. RescueTime On Your Mac FAQ. Can I install RescueTime On My Mac from Cydia? The iTunes package (itself a file format for music) is not compatible.
How do I block websites on RescueTime?
If you are using the RescueTime app on a Mac, your computer automatically blocks websites when you are using the app.
This works by checking your browser history and other information and blocking any websites that are accessed in these places. If you would like to block more than one website, you can create a list of websites you want to block. You can then add these websites to a list in the app.
If you are using the RescueTime app on a Windows computer, there is no automatic block. You can either choose to block websites manually or use the Block Websites option.
How do I block websites on the RescueTime web site? If you are using the RescueTime web site, you can go to the Block Websites section and add websites you want to block. If you have a business subscription, you can also sign up for Website Blocking. This service will automatically block websites when your employees use the RescueTime app. You can set a time limit for each site that is blocked. For more information on how to use this service, see the Using Website Blocking section.
If you are a personal user, you can only use this feature if you are using the RescueTime app on a Windows PC. Can I unblock sites once I block them? You can unblock a site once you have blocked it. To unblock a site, go to the Block Websites section in the app. Under How to unblock a site, select Don't show again. This will stop the website from showing up in your browser history and won't cause your activity to change.
Is there a free version of RescueTime?
I was thinking about paying for RescueTime, but my work uses its own time tracking system (that I love and use daily) so I'd have to pay for that as well. I don't need the desktop version either. Does the website version include the features that you need? Thanks!
I really want a free version. I'm always switching between tasks in other programs. It's so easy to lose track of time. My employer is also a bit cheap. They are offering me a 30 day free trial on a RescueTime Pro trial. But its not allowing me to take advantage of it because I need to be online before 6 am which it says is "no early bird". So any ideas on a free version? I would prefer not to try the 30 day one because it seems like its not a good service.
The basic site-wide view for a business isn't bad enough? I'm just missing reports like graphs. As someone who uses RescueTime to measure their personal productivity (and therefore productivity for the rest of us), this looks pretty bad for non-businesses: The site takes over most of the top of the screen, and because there is no space for any kind of widgets/navigation/etc, I don't see any way to get to the bottom to get to the summary view. I don't use a tablet or other device with a browser on it, and using a laptop doesn't give me room for anything else that would make the RescueTime less valuable. Even when I'm on my work machine, there is usually only room for a few things, such as some tabs and the window of my text editor, and maybe a browser. So when I need something that allows me to look at time from another viewpoint, in a context where I can quickly get back to the important work, RescueTime (unless it's a paid version) won't work for me.
I think that there are far too many free options out there, and this one looks particularly bad, but I think that if you're going to offer your "free version", at least include all of the views you've provided for the cost, and be clear about how much the "free version" differs from the full version (so the user knows what they're missing out on).
