?I am working on a product at work that will handle email, I don't want to do a complete server for this purpose. I have access to an exchange server on another domain with an IMAP account on it. I have also got an email account on this server, so my idea was to write a windows service that is always running on my server to fetch the emails from exchange, and use this IMAP connection for everything else. This would mean that if I want to send/reply to an email it is really simple because I only need to connect to this server which would always have the mail on it. And as you said it should be very fast. So what are the disadvantages of this approach? I think I am looking for a bit of background for a newbie like me.
When you say "imap" you probably mean "imaps". IMAP is a protocol, and it's not really something you can "do". For example, you can certainly setup a POP3 or IMAP server. And, for the purpose of a small e-mail utility, IMAP will probably give you a lot of "what you don't need" functionality for free. Also, a Windows Service may not be the best way to accomplish what you're talking about. I think that a Web-based application with a "check for new messages" polling function might be a better approach.

For example, if there is some kind of legal regulation that your company must follow, having all mail on a company server seems logical. In theory, as soon as someone at your company gets an attachment or forwards an email to another person they may be deemed to have "received" the email in terms of the legal definition, and therefore there is an obligation on your company to store a copy. The legal obligation could also be extended to the attachments. I know one company that sends all email attachments by post and then pays a courier for delivery to a secure vault where the mail is then scanned and stored. If that storage facility is no longer accessible then those emails are "lost".
