Updated on August 11, 2017: Google has just confirmed that VPN services will no longer be offered by the Google Play store, starting in 2026. The first service to be shuttered by the search giant will be ExpressVPN's free plan. While Google isn't going so far as to say Google killed our VPN!, they are certainly closing the door on any future development of the service. It appears Google will instead focus on their own native VPN technology. We've seen it all before, but Google is an excellent business. They could sell out a little bit if they want. If we do see some other VPN services disappear though, it could raise questions about which ones are safe and which aren't. I wouldn't expect Google to shut down OpenVPN based VPNs anytime soon, however, even without VPN functionality, they'd likely still get away with it. We believe a strong argument can be made that we still need OpenVPN over all else due to its superior performance, while still being secure. However, we'd also like to let you know that you can still install OpenVPN on the Google Android device from the Google Play Store in the meantime.

The first mistake was with the connection that goes through the Google tunnel, called 'L2'. It's possible that this could fail at some point when your internet connection is interrupted or terminated. So I advise that you always use L1, if your connection is interrupted, even if it is via the Google tunnel.

The second mistake was that were too careful to make sure that L2 was protected against a disconnection. We created this protection mechanism so that in case the connection was being terminated in some way, it would not work. Unfortunately, in the new version, we made changes to the way the whole system works, that could cause the protection mechanism to stop working. Now the connection through L2 could disconnect unexpectedly, and because the protection mechanism that prevents L2 from functioning doesn't exist anymore, it could happen. You can see that our new L2 protocol does not have any check on whether it can be reconnected, and this might cause problems. We also changed how the client connects to the L2 connection, and because the changes we made are not backwards compatible, it's possible that some clients may not function with our new connection format.
