And the sad truth is, while Animal Planet has had quite a revival in recent years, there are some shows on there that are going to be hard to find. Animal Cops is a pretty good show. It follows animals who work around an urban area, and often the animals just want to do their own thing without too much management from police. The cops have to be careful though since the animals really hate having humans around them, and sometimes they'll react irrationally if one gets too close to them. It's been entertaining to watch over the years, but it's definitely going through a tough time right now.

Blue Mountain Lions follows the lives of mountain lions living high up in the mountains of Wyoming. These cats aren't the largest lion in the world - they actually belong to the mountain lion clan, not the cougar species - but they're pretty big. They use their big bodies to stalk down smaller prey to eat. This show is probably the most realistic of the shows on Animal Planet, if only because the animals interact with the humans during their shows. It really shows how beautiful these predators can be as they slowly hunt their prey for food.

Bump that Cat continues the story of the first few seasons of Animal Cops. It mainly focuses on the cat, which is the name of the animal we're watching (and its name in this show). Its owner takes the kitty on adventures around the city and teaches him to survive. A lot of the show centers around teaching the animal how to find its prey and use everything it learns to deal with the different situations they run into.

Chaos in the Bronx follows two dogs and a couple of rabbits, all named after famous baseball teams, as they try to avoid starvation and dangerous streets in the Bronx. One of the dogs is a dog named Fonzie, because he looks like a version of Charlie when he was a young boy.

What has happened to Animal Planet?

It was a huge deal in the early 2000s.

The network's programming was all over primetime, its parent company (which now owns the History Channel and various other cable networks) became one of the biggest cable companies in the world, the channel was expanding outside the living room with new original shows like Puppy 911, and it could put out a DVD documentary on virtually any subject that it liked and a lot of those docs were good!

But all that has gone away. To many, Animal Planet is just another outlet that airs reruns. Some people watch it just because it's always there (at least during prime-time hours, when they're still awake and not at work) and they have no problem finding something else to watch; that is, if they even want to bother watching television these days.

What happened? A lot of things, frankly, but mostly this: The Animal Planet of 20 years ago would never be caught dead doing a rerun. That was as out of the building as we could be imagined. No, Animal Planet would be producing docudramas and documentary series (of which I don't want to watch one, no way), with actual scientists and people who really believed in some of their theories and had some experience with it happening to them, and then, maybe, if the show was good, it might actually get picked up.

That's why I really enjoyed a show called My Name Is Earl. It wasn't about animal; that's how it was billed. But that show used the animal theme, just like the title said it was going to, although Earl's best friend was named Bubba. That meant you got both a fish and a rodent, so I guess you'd call it biocultural hybridism. Anyway, Earl was from L., and his friends/buddies included a talking fish, a talking raccoon, a talking squirrel, and they all hung out a lot as best friends do. Oh, sure, one or two of them were talking to the others, too, but those were just bits here and there, not the main theme.

In fact, that's not really true; Earl and co.
