However, even if I enter the correct proxy IP address and port number in the browser, the connection is still made directly to the internet. What am I doing wrong? The proxy server isn't required but it's pretty common to set one up on the LAN to keep your home network private and secure. You don't need a proxy server, if you're on a work network you can just get the work proxy settings from the internet connection settings.
