I have installed the SOCKS5 server and connected to my VPN. The server is running on my Windows XP machine, and I have my Ip address forwarded to my IP in the VPN.
In my browser, I can connect to google with no problems. But when I try to connect to an IMAP account on the same server, or even a website I visit on that server, I get a timeout.
I would assume that it is because the VPN is connecting to the server before it sends me to the right IP address, but if that's the case, then I should be able to get to the server through my VPN. But you must make sure that you tell the SOCKS server (which is the VPN) that you are connected to a particular server. The VPN does not have any information about your IMAP server unless you tell it.
One problem with doing this is that many web servers have a default SOCKS server which will be used when your browser asks you for one. So you can make things confusing for yourself.
