Where can I use anonymous proxies?

We are planning to use anonymous proxies within our application. Where can I use them? I am asking this since the proxies are not part of the application. I understand that the application cannot know about the proxies. It can only know about the hostnames.

Let me ask the question in a different way, and I'll make the answer clear: Is using a Proxy (ie something like ProxyChains or VirtualBox with a shared proxy connection) bad practice? I know that this kind of proxy makes it much easier to crawl websites with a potentially high number of visitors, and that's why it is a potential security risk. But if I use a proxy that I set up myself, it's kind of like a gatekeeper, where a visitor has to go through my gateway before she can access my websites. That way I can see who is visiting what websites, and that's a security risk maybe, but I can also view the visitors real IP addresses.

If, on the other hand, I use a public proxy (ie a website that someone else set up) then I can never see what they are visiting, since they can just set up a proxy and the visitors never know it. So, in the end, is using a Proxy a security risk and/or bad practice? Or should I just ignore the part about using a shared proxy and simply set up my own? It's a matter of your own security and your access to the data of the person you are dealing with. Is there a good reason you need to have that data, and do they have the means to keep it?
