Is 1.1.1.1 still the fastest DNS?

We've had a bit of conversation on DNS (for me at least) so I thought I'd bring the two most commonly used DNS servers from Australia into a performance test. There are some important aspects to take into consideration when measuring latency or any service: If you are using a VPN with a server other than the authoritative one then it will appear slower because of the network overheads, but it is still a speed test with no effect or noise. How many requests are sent? Do you expect to use this functionality often? Is it for the whole day? Will you be switching off the internet for any time? What happens if one server goes offline? The tests on my machines with the two most widely used DNS servers were done on the following configuration: I ran the test on a Windows 7 and an Ubuntu desktop using Windows 7 for the testing. I didn't really expect a speed difference between the two as they seem pretty similar. But I found that Windows 7 was about a fifth of the speed of the Ubuntu machine.

So what does this mean? So a lot of these what if a server fails type answers are difficult. We've now had two instances with Google and both went down without any problems - which gives us some reassurance that the Internet will keep on working even if our ISP shuts us off. That said, for the most part we only get intermittent connectivity to the Internet from our current ISP. Some of the tests were run on a couple of days where we also had no connectivity at all. So if you are thinking of using DNS for the first time or just updating, I would definitely not depend on just one server.

And how does this relate to the previous testing? It seemed that you had the chance of being able to use DNSCrypt if your ISP's DNS server were to go down, however this turned out to be false. If your ISP's DNS server fails you have nothing to go to other than your ISP, which was probably the reason behind this being shown to not be true.
