Microsoft and Sony have both released a ton of information about their next-gen consoles.

Both are still keeping tight-lipped about the hardware, but the software side of things are being dropped in detail like crazy.

There's a lot to take in, but one of the most interesting aspects is what happens when two companies try to make exactly the same console. The Xbox One X and PS5 are set to be released in the coming months.

Both are set to be the ultimate console ever. Both will be powered by AMD's Ryzen processors and Microsoft has said it's built a custom GPU that's twice as powerful as the one inside the Xbox One X.

What does it mean for Microsoft and Sony? It means we'll be seeing a new generation of consoles soon. Here's everything we know about PS5.

Sony wants to be a leader in VR. The biggest news is Sony has big plans for VR. The PlayStation VR will launch with PS5, but the company's also looking to make other versions of the headset. We don't know the exact specifications, but it's expected to be about the same price as the PS4 version.

PlayStation VR will launch in the US in October, but the company will sell the headset globally. That means Europe and Japan will get it early, too.

PlayStation VR Worlds will come with VR-specific game demos, like Doom and The Persistence. It'll launch alongside the PS5, but the two won't be compatible. We've no idea how the headsets will work together, or if it'll require the PS5 to run them.

A new mobile-only console, perhaps? We've heard a few times about a new PS5-powered PlayStation tablet. It's possible this could be a replacement for the PS Vita.

While we've heard about the idea before, it's only been rumors. There are other potential uses, too. A PlayStation VR Worlds release could be tied to a mobile device.

There are also rumors that Sony wants to move away from traditional consoles altogether. Instead, it wants to launch a low-cost PlayStation-branded gaming tablet.

It wouldn't be the first time. Sony already made a tablet-based console. It was called the PlayStation Tablet and released in 2026.

If you're looking to upgrade from PS4 Pro, the good news is that the slim model of PS5 will be backwards compatible with PS4 Pro games. If you're looking to upgrade from PS4 you'll have to make do with the standard PS5 model.

In terms of hardware, PS5 will have 8GB of RAM and a faster CPU, but the storage capacity is going to be the same as the PS4 Pro. If you're not a gamer who plays games with high-resolution graphics then it probably won't make a difference to you which model you buy, but for those of us who play a lot of games or own high-res media the decision might be more difficult. If you're looking for the best of the best then the PS5 Pro will set you back 500, which is a lot of money, but if you're looking for a middle of the road option then you can get the PS5 Slim for 450, which is not as expensive as the PS5 Pro, but still expensive. The only difference between the PS5 Pro and PS5 Slim is the GPU. The PS5 Pro has a custom AMD GPU (the X570), while the PS5 Slim has a custom Sony design.

Should I upgrade to PS5 Slim? When we tested the PS5 at launch last year, we said that if you're happy with your PS4 Pro now and you don't mind the extra cost then you might want to wait. After two years of the PS4 Pro being around and the PS5 getting teased, now is probably a good time to update to the latest and greatest. The benefits of upgrading to the PS5 Slim include faster processing speed, an HDMI 2.1 port, and more storage space than the PS4 Pro.

You can currently pick up a PS4 Pro with a 1TB hard drive for 379.99 on Amazon, so 50 cheaper than what it was when we first reviewed it, but that price is already 90 less than the PS5 Pro.

It's a simple enough question to answer, and it's been something that we've been wondering about for a long time now. It seems like a logical question given how many slim-design models of the PS5 have been spotted out in the wild, as well as all of the reports that have suggested that Sony is planning on using an even more compact PS5 design when compared to its predecessor.

So, it would be reasonable to assume that Sony would want to make their next PS console even slimmer than what they already have available. While it's possible that we may be getting a slim version of the PS5, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that it's not going to be the case. But, there are plenty of reasons as to why this answer is a little surprising.

For starters, the PS5 has already been seen in a bunch of different configurations over the past few years. But, the PS4 Slim model has been a thing that's been on most people's minds since it was announced. So, it stands to reason that we'd be getting something similar to that next-gen model. But, Sony is likely not only going to make the PS5 more slim, but also making it a little better as well.

That being said, there's a reason as to why there are so many rumors surrounding the PS5 and Slim-Design PS5. I'm sure Sony knows that they need to hit this right with their next console release, and by all accounts they're already working hard to get it right.

Of course, there's one thing that could get in the way of the PS5 getting a slim model, but it's one that should hopefully be easy to get past. By that, I'm referring to the fact that we're currently talking about the PS5 being made available for purchase in November of this year.

How much smaller will the PS5 Slim be?

Sony made announcement at E3 2026 confirming that the new, smaller PS5 console will be a smaller version of the original PS5. However, we weren't given any other information about the size of the PS5 Slim beyond what the company has stated on the official PlayStation Twitter account.

As we mentioned, Sony announced that the PS5 would be the ultimate playstation that's the ultimate in everything during their E3 2026 press conference. Unfortunately, the company didn't state which version of the PS5 they were referring to in that statement. The PS4 Pro was initially confirmed for release at the same time as the PS5, but the company only mentioned that the console would be able to accelerate graphics.

In addition to the above statement, the PS5 will also reportedly feature HDR technology and the capability to display 2160p (ultra HD) content on its display. In addition, it will support 4K content up to 120 frames per second.
