Is SOCKS5 enough for torrenting?
SOCKS is already well-known for having a lot of benefits.
If you want to have access to the site, there's plenty of stuff that works with it. If you're just having to go from outside IP to inside IP, SOCKS5 should do it.
Now, in some countries, it might be blocked by ISPs, but SOCKS5 still does that. Then if you're in places where ISPs block it, or there's certain restrictions, or whatever else, you can just tunnel over HTTP using a regular proxy service.
That's why, I think, people generally say that SOCKS5 should be enough. That seems really sketchy though. It isn't like they have a list of banned sites and what happens when you try to visit one that's on the list, right? Isn't that like a honeypot? I mean, yeah, maybe the ISPs would check all your traffic, but they don't do any kind of filtering on its own anyway, so they'd be doing their whole "what are you doing here?" thing anyway. So the honeypot wouldn't matter.
On top of that, I'd expect people to only try and visit these sites when they're asleep, because otherwise they'd never visit them. That way, someone trying to get into a site without paying the ransom wouldn't even find it.
So I guess my question is whether SOCKS5 is good enough, or whether I'm going to have to go through all the extra trouble of going over the web and looking up proxies. I do know that for certain websites, you have to use a different browser (eg. Chrome instead of Firefox). But I don't think that applies torrents specifically.
Yes, but I've read about people who try to use browsers that are specifically designed for this kind of thing (which can be a bit of work to set up, depending on your setup). As far as SOCKS is concerned, I don't think you'd need any specific tweaks. I'd have thought that the "normal" proxies would just handle it correctly.

Can SOCKS5 be traced?
A few months back, I wrote that SOCKS5 Proxy could be traced and it turned out to be true.
In short, I found a way of tracing Proxy protocol traffic across the internet (through sniffing) using a tool on Kali Linux distribution. So, in this post, we will see how to trace SOCKS proxy traffic using nc (Network Connection) as a tool and the results so far.
Ncsocks: a simple nc client. This is not a new thing but still I am sharing a simple command to use. We will use ncsocks package for our purpose and we will run the command like nc -l 1234 -s 5060.
If you haven't installed ncsocks, execute following command: sudo apt-get install ncurses-proto. If you want to trace IP protocol, you just need to add -P (which is a port number which can have any positive integer value) in between nc and the port number. So, for instance nc -l 8888 -s 1234 would trace TCP/IP communication on port 8888.
So now with this setup in place, here is our command that uses the above method to sniff the traffic going through SOCKS proxy. Just run the command: sudo nc -lu 8087 -g -nP 2 -w5 127.1:5060 Here is the output that I got. I ran this command while connected through my VPN (my connection is on 8080 port) and here the port range was from 8077 to 8093.1 Remote Host: 5.30.
If you see in the above output, the Remote and Local Host of my IP address is given followed by a 5.29.
You can run nc -lu 8077 -g -nP 2 -w5 127.1:5060 to get the exact same results or the nc command used to run this program.
