Why is there no internet after connecting to VPN?

I am using OpenSwan (linux) as my VPN server. I use the LAN ip address as my public IP to connect to it. I have a dynamic DNS service to handle changes of my public IP, so I have an A record that points to the correct IP.

When I try to connect to the VPN, I can get through the connection but I get no internet. If I change the DNS to the same DNS name of the VPN server I can get internet again, and if I change it back to my dynamic DNS it stops working again.

It's a common problem, but not a problem with VPN. It happens when the OpenVPN client and the OpenVPN server cannot talk to each other. So the server is working as intended, it's just that there's something wrong with the client.

Why does NordVPN disconnect my internet?

I've used NordVPN for 3 years, and every day without fail, it suddenly disconnects my internet connection.

It does not reconnect immediately, but eventually it does. This occurs every time I connect to a new location on any of their servers, including new continents such as Europe, Asia, South America, and Canada. It's annoying problem, because if it disconnects too long, my work gets affected. Sometimes it has taken several days, other times it hasn't gone for weeks at a time. It may have happened a few dozen times in the past 6 months or so.
