How the service plans to grow and what it means for Hulu Originals
It's been a long and often strange journey for Hulu since it was founded as a service for television providers in 1997, and its current position as an internet-only entity, with no cable or satellite partners, is not a natural one.
But one of the major trends at Hulu over the last year has been this: it's making more money than ever. Hulu's original series, on the other hand, have been a consistent source of revenue, with some like "The Handmaid's Tale" setting new records for subscription cable shows.
We had the chance to speak with Paul Gitter, senior VP of digital at Hulu to talk about its business strategy. Gitter shared a lot of interesting information about the streaming service, while also giving us insight into how he and his team have managed to build a successful streaming business while working within strict limitations.
PCMag: You've said before that Hulu has never made a profit, even in its early years when it mostly ran off advertising. Do you think that's true even with all the success that you've had recently, especially for "The Handmaid's Tale"? Paul Gitter: Yes, very much so. And I don't think it's really changed all that much. We're still selling ads against the content. We're just making a lot more money selling those ads.
We've tried to sell our own ad load, but there are certain things that, if you make a lot of money, you don't want to do.
What channels come with the Hulu app?
Hulu recently added the service to Apple's iOS device, iPhone, and iPad, as well as Android.
With the new app, it brings a selection of online videos streaming to your mobile device in addition to the traditional television channel lineup. For users who only watch on TV through satellite or cable services, it offers up TV shows as well as movie offerings. This comes in addition to Hulu originals like The Mindy Project.
The TV selection includes: CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, HGTV, Bravo, Lifetime, Comedy Central, MTV, TBS, IFC, AMC, BBC America, Food Network, WE tv, History Channel, OWN, E!, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, and Nick Jr., among others. The movies include Disney Movies Anywhere titles and Sony Pictures' own catalog of Sony Pictures classics. This selection can be watched on your phone, tablet, or desktop computer using the iOS and Android app, but only when you are not connected to Wi-Fi.
There are limitations to watching programs over Wi-Fi, like a maximum of four viewers at a time. But that shouldn't bother anyone who wants to watch Hulu remotely and in HD on the train or plane.99 per month for the premium service, but there is a free ad-supported plan as well.
You may see advertisements that pop up during viewing times. If the TV viewer has an active subscription to Hulu with Live TV, they will no longer be subject to ads.
The Hulu subscription is required in order for this app to work. So this means you won't be able to watch Hulu if you have a streaming video provider like Netflix or HBO Go. But you can purchase a Hulu with Live TV subscription and add the app to your existing Hulu/Live TV subscription to give yourself access to more channels. You will still need to pay separately for your content, and that is where the ads come in.
I have written several blogs about the various apps and services I use. It is just my opinion, but in my opinion, I love the freedom of being able to watch anything anywhere without worrying about my ISP or the type of internet connection. With the price being a little high for some people, and the lack of free apps, this is the reason why this is the most popular mobile streaming service.
