Can you log into Hulu on phone?
Hulu has had a pretty long history, but one thing that has always puzzled me was how Hulu can be so cheap and yet offer so much to pay so much for it.
So today I took my laptop, and my smartphone to see if I can log into Hulu on either device. Spoiler alert: it's not always easy. I'll tell you how I got it working for each device, but I wanted to say that this was something I couldn't have done without the help of someone who works at Hulu.
My laptop: It's not so much about buying a Mac or Windows computer; it's more about using both of them to see what they can do. My phone is an iPhone 4 with iOS 5.1. My laptop is a Windows 7 box with IE9 installed. Hulu is a bit of a pain to use in Chrome, because the site doesn't like when you change it from your default browser. The first thing I noticed while trying to login to Hulu was that you could create an account by entering your email address on both devices. For the most part, that's a nice thing, but here's the problem: If you try to enter your username or password on your phone, nothing happens. In IE9, it seems to work fine. But on the phone, I get an "Error" page. If you change the type of browser you're using, though, things start to go smoothly. I went back and forth between Chrome and Safari, and I finally used IE9.
That didn't work, though. I tried again in IE9 and Safari, but no luck. Hulu says, "Unable to load a video in mobile browser." That made me think it was my phone. To find out, I went to another site on my phone to test Hulu out. I tested all the videos on Hulu and found that I can log into Hulu and watch some of the videos on my phone. So I'm reasonably sure my phone is fine. The problem is Hulu won't play its videos.
I then tried Hulu again. I created an account on my laptop, but then logged out on my phone (I don't want to add my phone number to my laptop). When I went to my phone, Hulu told me I couldn't log in with my email address or phone number. So I gave them the username and password for my laptop.
Can I activate Hulu from my phone?
Yes. First off, we need to clear up one common misconception: The Hulu app is not a streaming device. You do not own a subscription to Hulu and streaming content. Instead, the app functions as a portal through which you watch content when you are out of Wi-Fi range. As part of its terms and conditions, Hulu requires your phone be connected to Wi-Fi unless you are out of range.
Before you try to make a Hulu account: Make sure your phone can connect to WiFi.e. The most important things are that it needs to be able to find a network, it needs a stable connection and, of course, it must have an active data plan.
Ensure that you're set up to use the Wi-Fi hotspot feature on your phone. Make sure that the Enable cellular data roaming setting is also turned on. You might need to tap the button a few times if you've already turned it off in the past.
Activating Hulu over cellular data. Once you're connected to the internet, log in to your Hulu account on your device. If you haven't set up a Hulu login before, the first time you sign in, you should be taken to the activation screen (shown below). Tap the arrow button to the right of Add Hulu Account.
Choose the country you reside in, whether or not you've already set up Hulu in that country and select what type of phone you'd like to add the account to. Keep in mind that if you sign up from certain countries, your account will be restricted to watching TV shows and movies there.
Finally, tap the blue Next button to get started with the activation process. Remember that to activate a Hulu account you need your password to be entered into the box below. Also, Hulu recommends you enter it by hand since typing could be a challenge on a mobile device. Enter your account name, email address, password and a security question (we suggest you pick something that you'd like to remember) in the relevant text boxes.
