What is the difference between YouTube and DTube?
YouTube and DTube are quite different in their nature.
In my opinion, the biggest difference is that YouTube is a platform for watching pre-uploaded content (videos and music) and DTube is a platform for uploading pre-uploaded content. It doesn't matter what you upload to either platform, they both have their own pros and cons, so I won't try to compare them. I just want to highlight some differences between these two platforms and show why I prefer DTube over YouTube. Users' freedom. When I watch YouTube, I like to choose what I watch and where I watch it. I can choose to view an advertiser's video (even though this video might not be safe for kids or whatever), I can view another user's video or I can watch any channel. There's no limit on how I watch anything. On the other hand, when I visit DTube, I don't get that kind of freedom. I get only videos which I choose to watch.
This is a small thing but it will really make a big difference. If there are some new music videos that you want to listen to, what will you choose? I think you will choose YouTube because of the freedom.
Another difference is that DTube is based on a social media model, while YouTube is not. If you have some time to watch videos but you don't know where to start, what will you do? I think you will search for a channel or user on YouTube to start watching his/her videos. But if you want to start from the beginning of a video, you will have to find a channel or a user. There is no searching feature on YouTube. Because of the difference between these two platforms, you need to think twice before you choose a website to watch videos. No ads. When you watch videos on YouTube, you have to pay to watch those videos. You have to buy advertisements before you can view videos. They say that it's an easy way to raise money for your channel, but as a user, I really hate it. And now they are using their money to create ads that look like content.
Can you earn money from DTube?

This is probably the number one most important and valuable tool for any affiliate marketer. Google's Webmaster Tools is just like a digital health thermometer for your website. You can check the keywords that are ranking in your site, see how often you're ranking in google, view all the errors that are showing up in Google, and see what your competition is doing. A very simple way to monitor the success of your keyword and web strategy efforts.
If I was doing this today I'd make sure to add an ad targeting function as well as a "bounce" rate one. This helps to identify websites that tend to bounce and either direct them to a landing page or put an emphasis on more pages on the landing page. For example, let's say I'm researching a computer, I'd like to start my research from the laptop's product page, however if I'm on a website that has a landing page instead, they'll show less than 10% of the product pages. Thus, I'd add an ad targeting system in where I can set a goal of how many specific landing pages I'd like to see and then I'm able to either redirect that site to a landing page with less than 10% of the product page content or I'll put an emphasis on landing pages.

This is the question we get asked a lot. And with good reason.
I, and many people I know, started DTube in 2026, inspired by Reddit, YouTube and a desire to create something completely free and open source. We built DTube as a self-funding project. We've never taken any money from the public.
Here's the problem: we don't have a great answer to that question. We just don't know how we're going to make it work. But we want to make it work, and we think this is important enough that we want to at least make some attempt. So we are exploring a few different options.
Here are the three that we've decided to try: Patreon. The main challenge of running DTube is finding people willing to contribute money to the project. We know people would love to contribute a little money, but can't justify the cost of providing a service.
So we've been working on Patreon. It's not perfect, but it's better than not trying anything. Our goal is to build a free culture community, and our hope is that it will be a gateway to larger payments.
We need to build a sustainable business model. After all, our main goal is not to make money for ourselves it's to make money for the community. The key question is how to balance between making money to keep the lights on, while also supporting a community that relies on us.
Donations. DTube could use a lot more money. We run all of our servers with volunteer labor.
But we have a limited number of hours in a day to put into this project. And we have limited staff resources. So we need to find a way to take money from the community and use it to fund our services.
This is difficult because our services are free. So we'll have to figure out a business model that does not rely on charging money for people to access our content. And so far, we don't know what that is.
But we think it's important that we give back to the community and that we offer value to the community.
