Try holding down the power button and the home button (together) until you see the Apple logo and the spinning circle in the center of the screen stop. Then let go of the power button and home button, you will get to the initial setup screen. When you get to that screen, simply press the power button to get back to the home screen.

You do not have to remove the battery to complete the reset process. You will see the apple logo and the spinning circle in the middle of the screen indicating that you are in recovery mode. Now, you can continue the reset process by pressing and holding down the power button and the home button again. After that, it will show you the initial setup screen where you can select the language and the keyboard layout that you prefer. Now, as soon as you select your preferred language, press and hold down the power button and home button again. You should be able to enter Recovery Mode on the Home screen which is the initial setup screen. From there, you can get into Setup Mode to Factory Reset your iPad.
