What is a ASN used for?
ASN is a classification system that uses unique object identifiers.
The classifications used for ASN use some form of standardization on how to classify certain types of objects, and allow others to use the classification they prefer for similar or same types of objects.
The purpose of using ASN is to allow multiple vendors of similar products to provide a generic product identifier. When the vendor has a choice between what product to use in a given situation (ie two similar types of computers from different vendors), the person who requests the identifier must say which type of identifiers it expects from all different vendors. They all agree the identifiers they're using will be the same in this case. The vendor then can just map their identifiers to the ASN for the specified class of objects, and then their products can be identified using the same class-based standards.
In the case of medical products, they often use some form of the U. Common Criteria International (CCI) ASNs that you are referring to. When developing their own classification systems, companies such as ISO, FDA, C-TEC, etc. Use these ASNs as the basis for their own classification systems. They then also make this information available so other companies may use their classification systems.
