How to install Urban VPN on Windows 10?

I have installed Windows 10 Home edition and I want to install an open source VPN. I was using the Open VPN client on Linux (ubuntu 16.04).

The problem is that I can't get this to work on Windows 10. The Open VPN website doesn't have any compatible client for Windows, but they do provide instructions to compile their OpenVPN client for Windows. I managed to do that, but there are several problems:

I couldn't find anything in my Internet settings like in the Ubuntu settings. My Internet settings are all new to me, so I might have overlooked something.

In the VPN settings page of the OpenVPN GUI, everything except Connection has OpenVPN only in its context menu. For some reason the Ubuntu OpenVPN GUI lets me choose a VPN connection type there, but the Windows one doesn't.

A couple of things are missing from the command prompt. There is no ping command there, nor an nslookup command. There is no dig command, nor an host command. There is no route command.

This makes it really difficult for me to run the example code given in the OpenVPN guide. I can't use all of the commands provided there, because they are not available.

The OpenVPN guide states that they have fixed this problem for Windows 10 and provided a workaround in case it happens to you. But I tried the workaround, and it didn't work.

In their workaround they say that they have changed a couple of options in the OpenVPN GUI, but they don't say how to change them, and they don't say which ones they have changed. Therefore, the conclusion I come to is that it's impossible to install OpenVPN using the GUI. This question is related to this one.

How to Install OpenVPN on Windows 10. Here is a solution that I found on the web and tried out. It doesn't actually involve any manual configuration. In my case, after following the instructions, the results were better than with the GUI.

(I also found that the OpenVPN GUI does work after all, if I set it up right. This is just some additional information.
