This is a great idea. I have always wanted to do the same on my iPhone, so this is going to save me some time. But it is a lot more complicated than I anticipated. If you follow the steps below you will avoid headaches like mine did.

You must use an iPad. I can't get this working with a phone or computer. For more info on iOS 10 go to:

Connect your iPhone via WiFi to your Wi-Fi enabled iPad (preferably the latest model of iPad that Apple has sent out yet). Power up your iPad and set it to DHCP instead of manually configuring the DNS settings. Once you are connected to your iPad via wifi you will need to sign in with your iCloud credentials. From there go to the settings app in the notification center. Scroll all the way down and click on General. Select the DNS settings under the Domain Name Settings heading and you will see two options for DNS: Dynamic or DNS servers. A drop down will come up with all of the ip addresses for all 4 quadrants which are listed. Click on the one closest to the United States (I live in New York). This address will be your default DNS server address, but you will still be able to select your second primary DNS. The only downside to this method is that if you change ip addresses or delete ip addresses in your quadrants (or change DNS) you will not be able to access iCloud or the internet for a while.

You could always set up a cloudflare vps and use their free dns service. That may be easiest and cheapest option, and the service itself is easy to set up. To get an IP address there is a free pool where you don't have to pay a dime.
