Why is my iPad connected to Wi-Fi but saying no service?
If you connect your iPad to the Apple Airport express router, but it doesn't recognize any Wi-Fi network and your iPhone doesn't recognize your Wi-Fi network either, it might because the router uses something called captive portal. Captive portals are used to force the iPad or your iPhone to complete an authentication process for a network they might need to join. The captive portal requires that your device authenticate to the service provider before gaining access to their network.
It's quite possible that your Wi-Fi and the Internet services through the captive portal you get from a large organization like Google's Project Fi or AT&T's Mobile Share Data Connect plans requires users to download apps or connect to a site as part of the service. If you find that the captive portal isn't working, try adding a passcode to the router so the login can only be completed through the iPad or iPhone, and then connect to a known Wi-Fi network such as the Starbucks network that you use all the time. You can still use that Wi-Fi network even if you don't have access to an Internet-connected computer.
Here's what you need to know about Wi-Fi captive portals, passcodes and why you might be getting service on a network with a captive portal. What's a captive portal? It happens when an unauthenticated device connects to a network that is trying to enforce an authorization to allow them to access the Internet. It's not something you want to do because it usually blocks the device from accessing the Internet, and when you can't access the internet on your iPhone or iPad you can't update or install software or apps. For example, you might get a captive portal when using a Starbucks Wi-Fi network while signing into their e-mail with your Gmail account.
It works in a lot of ways. You could be using Google's Project Fi or AT&T's Mobile Share Data Connect service and can't even start connecting to the mobile data network. If it's using captive portal technology from your Wi-Fi provider, it'll keep you logged out of your internet connection. In that situation you'll need to authenticate on your Wi-Fi at a location where you can access the internet and reset the password.
Why does my iPhone connect to Wi-Fi but not my iPad?
I just bought an iPhone, but when I turned it on, the iPad (also my son's) would not connect to our home Wi-Fi.e. It would connect fine to the office Wi-Fi.e. I am not sure why.
Wi-Fi has a higher priority than Bluetooth, so I would suspect that your iPhone is trying to connect to your home network via Wi-Fi and it may be failing. If you can't tell which device is connected by looking at the top bar of the status screen, the simplest way to identify which device is connected is to restart the network connection. If the phone is connected via Wi-Fi, you should see "Wi-Fi" at the top of the status screen. If the iPad is connected via Bluetooth, you should see "Bluetooth" or "iPad".
Note that some devices have multiple interfaces (such as a mobile data connection and Wi-Fi) so it is possible that you may need to go through the network settings on your iPad to select the interface you want to use.
Why is my iPad connected to the Wi-Fi but still not working?
If your iPad is connected to a Wi-Fi network, but you don't see your iPad listed in the Wi-Fi settings, the following are a few things you can try.
Step 1: Check the Wi-Fi signal strength on the status bar. When your iPad isn't connected to the Wi-Fi network, the Wi-Fi signal indicator will be black. Tap and hold the Wi-Fi indicator and move your finger around on the screen. If the Wi-Fi indicator turns green, the Wi-Fi network you're connected to is strong enough to provide your iPad with a Wi-Fi connection. If the Wi-Fi indicator turns yellow, the Wi-Fi network is too weak to provide your iPad with a Wi-Fi connection.
If the Wi-Fi indicator turns red, your iPad is connected to the Wi-Fi network, but there is no Internet connection. When this happens, your iPad will automatically connect to a cellular network.
Step 2: Check the Wi-Fi network. If your iPad can't find any Wi-Fi networks to connect to, it may not have the latest software updates installed. To find out whether your iPad has the latest software updates, go to the App Store. Tap Updates and tap Update All.
If your iPad still doesn't have the latest software updates, check your device for the update over Wi-Fi or USB (if it's connected to your computer), or via iTunes. If it's over Wi-Fi, connect your iPad to a Wi-Fi network to install the updates.
Connecting the iPad to a cellular network. If you've checked the Wi-Fi indicator in step 1 and it's still showing red, your iPad might be connected to a cellular network instead of Wi-Fi.e. To check if this is the case, go to the Settings app. Tap General, then tap About. The Cellular information screen shows the cellular network that your iPad is connected to.
Turn off cellular data or Wi-Fi only. Your iPad will automatically connect to a cellular network if there is no Wi-Fi network available. If you want to limit your iPad's ability to connect to cellular networks, turn off Wi-Fi only. To do this, go to the Settings app.
Why does my iPhone say it's connected to Wi-Fi but won't work?
I have a new iPhone 6 Plus that has worked perfectly well ever since I bought it about three weeks ago.
There has been no lag or problems whatsoever with getting online. Yesterday when I left my house the Wi-Fi would often disconnect, but as I continued to travel, I noticed that it was not happening as often. For instance, I had to go from my front door to work, which is a few blocks away. I drove down the street and parked in front of my building. When I walked inside, the Wi-Fi on my phone wouldn't connect at all, and then about halfway through the building, it suddenly started working again without any intervention.
My wife used to have an iPhone 5S that she got refurbished from Apple a while back. It never really got working properly and I've not been able to figure out what's causing it to disconnect. Since the refurbished phone has been in my office at work, I thought that maybe the old battery was draining something or my phone wasn't charging properly and I thought that perhaps swapping it out and re-loading software could fix it. However, since it now has the new software, I don't know if this phone had the same problem with the battery or what it could be.
I can't figure out why my iPhone won't work either. Any ideas? The data plan also doesn't have access to much in terms of cellular connectivity because I use it for business apps. My carrier data plan is included in a corporate plan. But since there is data coming in from my phone, it should be able to make calls and send and receive texts. Am I missing something here? I'm pretty sure the new software came out yesterday.
Re: ? As you may have gathered, you're still having a problem; and I know how these things work. There's nothing that can be done to get it working. Your SIM card is no longer inside the device and is probably dead or at best, in some distant land. That's the good news.
And now we wait. A few months? Maybe even a year or two? The manufacturers (Apple, Samsung, and others) will continue to update their software and release devices.
