What is the order of states?

Are there 50 official states in the United States?

Answer: No.

U.S. States have no bearing on state of mind, only legal responsibility.

As a nation of immigrants and people of faith, we cannot be the only nation in the world to set aside these principles and, indeed, this is one reason why some Muslim leaders say they are not comfortable with the term 'Muslim ban.' Answer: All immigrants and people of all faiths have been welcomed in America since its founding and this idea that Muslims and Muslims alone have been unwelcome has been proven false time and again. It will be interesting to see what reaction you get from most real conservatives (most of whom have been exposed by Obama in the past 8 years) to your assertion that America should not welcome immigration from Muslim nations based on its founding principles. And most importantly, why do you not believe any other non-American nations deserve a chance at freedom and democracy too? Muslims, I know, are a part of human history but that doesn't make them a part of US history. Muslim terrorists are an existential threat to Islam and are not part of American history so Muslims should not be welcomed here as the founding principles of America clearly state otherwise I don't call it racist because it's my duty as a president of the United States to keep Americans safe from terrorism. I consider it racist because it targets a specific religion without considering whether they are a danger to our country.

So you're trying to tell me I should put someone in a room and ask them if they believe in One God so I can determine if they are a potential terrorist before putting that person on a plane and subjecting him/her to security checks? I don't think so. This order was issued by a prejudiced administration solely based on malice and religious animus.

It isn't prejudice that would compel our leaders to act based on Islam, but a desire to protect innocent lives. If Islam actually did want to protect innocent lives, you and the Left could start your own Muslim terror network, just like any true terrorist wants to kill as many innocent people as possible. What Islam truly wants, is to kill as many innocents as possible!

Are there 52 states in the United States of America?

The United States of America is a federal republic and a union of states.

In accordance with the U. Constitution, the number of states varies from 50 to 104, depending on the size of the land area of the country, including the commonwealths of Puerto Rico, Guam, the U. Virgin Islands, and American Samoa. Each state has a government; its powers are derived from, and are subject to modification by, acts of Congress. Constitution also vests Congress with the power "to dispose of and make all needful Rules and Regulations respecting the Territory or other Property belonging to the United States." Accordingly, the territorial status of the U. Territories, such as Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U. Virgin Islands, may be changed only through a constitutional amendment, such as occurred with Alaska's admission to the Union in 1959. The United States has acquired at least three other former sovereign nations (Hawaii, the Philippines, and the United States), and the term Native American may be used in reference to any tribes not then within the United States.

Since the District of Columbia (and since 1971 Puerto Rico) is considered a State of the United States, so too are certain states of the United States. It follows that the name of the United States itself is officially recognized as a state name in some countries, because it is listed under such a designation in treaties, international agreements, and other international documents and resolutions.

As of 2026, there are fifty-four states and two territories (Puerto Rico and American Samoa) in the continental United States, which are not associated with a single nation or common sovereignty. These states have their own unique governments and separate legal systems; American Samoa's status as a unincorporated territory of the United States means that the federal system does not extend to it, while each of the other fifty states is a sovereign member of the United States, which is the world's most powerful nation in terms of political, military, and economic might.

For over a century, the idea of a new state seceding from the Union was almost universally seen as highly improbable, with almost no one believing that it would ever happen.

How many states are in the US or 51?

The US has 50 states and Washington, DC.

It is believed that there was originally 12 states in the union, with 3/4 of them being part of the UK at the time. So, how many states were in the US when it was first founded?

There were 13 original colonies, including Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Delaware. The original colonies would have had a total of 25, then, which would be 50 when you added DC.

There's some debate about whether or not to include these as part of the US or not. Some people consider them as part of the British Empire, while others consider them independent.

How many original US states are there? It's up to how you define "state". Some people think the same way about the term "US state" that we think about "British Empire" states - they're just a part of the country. Others think they're their own country, so they might count them as something else.

As it happens, there are exactly 50 states in the US, not 51. In 1785, there were 13 original US colonies, including Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Delaware. That's 25 states, but in order to form a new union, you need to add a new state, which was what the new government did.

When the Civil War happened, the South seceded from the US, leaving 10 US states, one US territory, and two US protectorates. Since then, some of the territories became states, and three states joined.

No, the US has 50 states and Washington DC, because the US includes a portion of British North America. That portion of British North America was not the original 13 colonies, but was the Province of Quebec (which was later renamed Canada) in the mid-18th century.
