(I never used it before ) It's OK to start with a local proxy. However, make sure that when you go to the internet (if this is at home) your LAN/network settings don't interfere with other peoples traffic. Try disabling the following network config options -

TCP/IP Protocol. Tunnel Protocol. Use Default Tunneling Protocol. Your local network should be fine if you start out and the only server you have access to on the local network is the target machine, you just want to make sure the connection on your PC between you and the outside is clear as TCP/IP will set up a virtual interface on your machine.
