Is WSO2 an API gateway?
I'm looking to set up a simple backend system for a SPI've seen the WSO2 AM's and WSO2 ESB's, but they seem very complex, and not as simple as what I'm looking for.
I don't want to have to go into my database to get data, or do a bunch of stuff in the back-end, so is WSO2 simply an API gateway? I think you may be conflating a few things here. First, AM is a product that can act as an API gateway. It's based on Axis2. ESB is based on OSGi and Spring, and thus not really an API gateway. It's just a container for your services and it can expose them via various transports (web services, tcp/ip, etc.)
What you're after sounds more like ESB. As such, you could use either as a gatekeeper for your REST calls, or an ESB. You could also build your own custom API gateway using Apache Karaf or other options.
What is WSO2 used for?
WSO2 is a platform that can be used as an open source enterprise service bus (ESB) for building SOA-based applications. WSO2's ESB can be used for implementing SOA-based business processes using ESB-enabled services. WSO2 supports many enterprise and service-level protocols and messaging standards in its enterprise service bus architecture and also provides rich interfaces to third-party communication protocols. The current implementation of the WSO2 service bus is open-source and available under the WSO2 Community Edition License. To make the implementation and use of the service easier, it has an online IDE and a comprehensive set of samples and tools to demonstrate it.
What is WSO2's API manager? The API Manager in WSO2 is the application programming interface (API) management system used to manage the APIs in the WSO2 ESB. WSO2 API Manager allows developers to publish, view and execute the APIs in WSO2 ESB. It can be used to search, filter, sort, and group the APIs. It can be also used to publish, view and execute the APIs directly from a URL or a local file in a container such as a WAR file.
What is WSO2's ESB? WSO2 ESB is a SOA-based solution for building enterprise-class, web-service-based applications. It can manage multiple enterprise service bus instances to enable enterprises to use this technology in SOA solutions. The WSO2 ESB is based on a web-services based architecture.
What is WSO2's ESB server? WSO2 ESB Server is a Java-based server application that can host and expose Java Enterprise Service Buses. WSO2 ESB server can be hosted on top of Java Enterprise Edition (Java EE). It can run in an installed server in the cloud or on an HPC cluster.

What is the difference between LDAP and WSO2?
WSO2 is a complete web services product whereas LDAP is just an LDAP client.
WSO2 can do almost all the things that LDAP does, but WSO2 provides additional features and is easier to use. That's a very broad statement. WSO2 is more than a LDAP client. It provides many other capabilities as well.
A lot of people feel that way about WSO2. I find it to be more powerful and easier to use than LDAP, but I'm sure it's subjective.
A LDAP client is something that connects to the LDAP server and sends queries to retrieve information. A WSO2 product is something that connects to the WSO2 server and sends queries to retrieve information.
