Does Chromecast Audio support lossless audio?
The most basic Chromecast Audio support is in lossy, ie.
downmixing audio to stereo. Google claims that their lossy audio quality is the highest available for its price. So, it's not lossless (and no, it doesn't support lossless either). However, what about DTS TruMedia? Can it be used with Chromecast Audio?
Update: There's now a full-fledged, multi-platform solution called M-Audio that does everything mentioned here except the lossless output.5 lb) rather appealing.
Update 2: The answer now goes out to my wife, who read this post and saw what was on my plate the next day. It's always something.
The Basics. Chromecast Audio is essentially a USB speaker and wireless amplifier; it connects to your speakers by default and allows you to control them wirelessly from the Chromecast app. It doesn't sound as good as an integrated amplifier, but it can easily handle audio below 8,500Hz at standard levels for music (80db SPL at 1m). It has 3.5mm and Optical jacks for plugging in external DACs, analog input devices like microphones, or optical SPDIF input devices like CD players or Blu-ray players. If all of this were supported losslessly, this would make for a great home theater system.
Lossy. Google claims lossy audio is at least 3 times better than competing solutions which sounds impressive if it's indeed the case. But there's no way that anything but standard 2-channel A/B audio would be that much better. Even if it is, that's only if its output is perfect. That means that if the output isn't perfect, or worse yet if it's worse than DTS TruMedia because the Chromecast's downmixing is not perfect, then no amount of extra volume will make up for the terrible output. For example, if the output was -1db LFE (even with 0db on the rest) and the user had full volume set, you couldn't get any more volume than -1db LFE with lossy output.
