Is Chromecast Audio bit perfect?
Chromecast Audio isn't on-par with the latest and greatest speakers you could get a hold of today, but it's also not the only Chromecast Audio available.
If you're in the market for a speaker-on-a-stick then this is an option to consider.
Let's start at the very beginning and ask this question: if we've been using Chromecast as a way to stream your existing Spotify playlist from your phone/tablet directly to your speakers, why does it matter that Chromecast Audio gets on par with more premium speakers? It doesn't really. In fact, when the Google device first hit shelves last October, there were a ton of problems: The price point was too high, the sound quality was middling, and if it fell or bumped into something, your music would go away. Since its launch, both of those issues have been addressed. On top of that, the Google Home Max has joined the party, giving us a second option that sounds fantastic and is much smaller than Chromecast Audio, but Google Music hasn't been released yet. For now, Chromecast is the one to own and it's certainly the easiest of the Chromecast options. Read our full review of the second generation Chromecast below. Chromecast Audio - Our Best Buy This holiday season, there are plenty of great streaming solutions available. And by great we mean "premium." From Apple's newest HomePods and AirPods to Sony's AVR-X50A and Sonos' Play 1:1s, streaming devices are finally catching up with the best speakers in a few key ways. While the Google Home Max and Sonos One might cost a bit more, there's no missing the point. For most consumers, streaming works best in a pair, with multiple people in a room using it, and Google seems to know that. In Google's eyes, that brings them back up to par with audio manufacturers. That said, it wasn't obvious how far Google was able to bridge until Google released the first Chromecast Audio. Let's start at the beginning and ask this question: if we've been using Chromecast as a way to stream your existing Spotify playlist from your phone/tablet directly to your speakers, why does it matter that Chromecast Audio gets on par with more premium speakers?
Does Chromecast Audio have a DAC?
Chromecast Audio is Google's new media streaming device that was announced a few weeks ago and that we wrote about here.
This device is not only a nice-looking way to connect your Chromecast Ultra to a stereo with a USB DAC or powered speaker, but also has a dedicated amplifier inside.
Although the device does not ship yet, we still want to get some information out there on what you can expect when you open the box and unbox the device. The box does not look as nice as the one from the Chromecast Ultra, but it is a simple white box with Chromecast on top and Chromecast Audio printed on the back.
I would like to know if it sounds any better than a Chromecast Ultra (at least to my ears) or if it improves audio quality even though it will probably run off the same little chip as the Chromecast Ultra, although in a different kind of box. To answer that question, I decided to compare Chromecast Audio to a USB DAC (the Oppo PM-2D), so I hooked up both devices and did some tests.
It turns out that the performance is a little disappointing, but I still think it sounds better than most smartphones. Although Chromecast Audio is not meant to replace your sound system, it still makes a nice complement to it. But let's take a look at how they sound first.
Testing Chromecast Audio. To test Chromecast Audio, I used a digital audio player called the PM-2D USB DAC.99. It is not as good as a high-end DAC, but it will give us an idea of the sound quality of the Chromecast Audio.
On the right side of the box is the volume control and the USB port that you can use to power it. The power button is on the left side, so it does not have a power cord. I used an Oppo PM-2D on my MacBook Pro with my own USB cable for the connection to the device.
I connected Chromecast Audio to my Google Home using the Chromecast Audio setup flow and tested the output through my Oppo PM-2D and my speaker. As soon as you plug in Chromecast Audio to your speakers or connected devices, you can start using the features that Chromecast Audio has to offer.
How do I improve Chromecast sound quality?
Recently, Google announced that they are bringing Chromecast HDMI streaming audio device to market.
The announcement was met with very positive feedback and this means that many of you who have not experienced what we have heard about the Chromecast is now going to purchase this device or have one on order. My goal of this article is to provide a step-by-step procedure for you to begin your own home theater experience with the Chromecast. I will take a brief background of this device and explain in more detail where and how this device can be used in your home. Finally, I will address how you can improve sound quality with the Chromecast and even provide my source of information for you to purchase it.
The good news is that the Chromecast is now available in Australia and many retailers are offering it at discounted rates. To find where you can purchase one from, simply visit Google.com/AU. In fact, I purchased mine from the Google Store (AU) in Sydney Australia. This is a new store so I do not know if the stores will accept returns. You can contact the stores to find out what their return policy is for your country of residence. Most retailers will gladly give you a refund for faulty units if you return them to them in the condition that you received them in. You can see a picture of my device from the store located in Sydney at the top of the right side of this article.
Google released this product as a way for users to access all of the entertainment options available from their Google services like Gmail, Youtube, Chrome, Google maps, etc. The idea is that you could watch videos while checking email, listening to music while browsing the web or just while you are enjoying the outdoors by casting your smartphone or tablet onto the television using the Chromecast streaming media player.
At the same time that the Google announced the Chromecast, they also introduced a new Android application named Chromecast Audio. It provides users with the ability to cast your Android smartphone or tablet audio out of the box via the Google Cast protocol. The Chromecast has a USB port to directly connect to a home stereo receiver which makes a great connection between mobile devices and a TV, but the USB port does come with limitations. It is hardwired into the device and cannot be used if your phone or tablet is connected via Bluetooth.
