Why is Google blocking access to an app?
Since the app was released on the Google Play Store, it has been blocked in a number of countries, including China, the UK and Germany. In each case, it is not blocked due to the app violating any rules, but rather because of a problem with the app's certificate.
The reason for the blocking is the certificate has been revoked. As a result, the Play Store blocks access to the app, regardless of whether it violates any rules or not.
The block can be removed in a number of ways. Firstly, the certificate can be restored, which means Google will look at the certificate and allow access to the app. Or, the certificate can be re-issued, which means the certificate is completely new.
In the case of the latest blocking, the certificate was revoked because the developer had moved the code of the app from the development machine to a live server. This is a mistake that should never have happened, but a similar thing happened before in the case of the "Ad Blocking" app.
What does this mean for the app? In the case of the Ad Blocking app, the certificate was revoked due to the developer's mistake, and the certificate was restored. There was no change in the app itself, and it continued to work as expected.
In the case of the "Unblock Google Play" app, the certificate was revoked for a completely different reason. However, the code of the app was not changed, so it continued to work as expected.
There was also a problem with the certificate for the "Wifi Direct" app, and the certificate was revoked. The app continues to work fine, so the certificate has been re-issued.
Why does this happen? Google Play uses a system called "Play Protect", which monitors apps for any issues. If a problem is found, the certificate for the app is revoked and access to the app is blocked.
How do I unblock blocked apps?
If you're using an app that has been blocked, you'll see a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in the app icon on your home screen. To unblock the app, tap the triangle to the right of the app's name. Tap Unblock to unblock the app. If the app isn't unblocked, tap Unblock Again.
