How to get an Apple push certificate?

After buying an iPad we needed to create push notifications for the app to appear in apps like "Weather", "Twitter", "Slacker", etc.

So I searched for some examples and found one by Google that uses an Apple Push Certificate, to register the device on Apple Server.

I've read some posts on a StackOverflow thread where others tryied to do the same. But this didn't work. And after a while I'm wondering if it is possible to get the apple push certificate without owning an appstore account. I thought there has to be a way with .p12 files, but the official documentation on the Apple website only contains a method for the certificates where the AppID can be found.

Does anyone have some insight, where I can get this cert? Any help on the topic appreciated! We actually don't have access to these certificates. You'll need an iTunes Store developer account to do anything with certificates.

How do I access my Apple certificates?

I'm trying to access my certificates and keys so that I can encrypt my iCloud backups.

But I can't find them in the iOS Keychain.
I went into the Settings app and selected "Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles" and then "Certificate Assistant". But I don't see any of my certificate or key pairs there.

How do I get access to the Apple certificates? To get to the keychain you have to go to the settings app and choose certificate assistant. On the left hand menu of that app you will see your certificate and its usage option. As you can see from my picture above, the certificate I want to use is the company (or customer) certificate. And it can be found in the device section of the keychain.

You need to enable "Keychain Access".

We have an iDevice with a MDM push certificate for iOS 10.

2 that expires this year and were wondering if there was any way to extend the validity date.

Our MDM push is for distribution of App Store and iTunes content and is required by our enterprise partners in order to distribute their content. The push certificate is embedded in the package and is not expired so we are currently only doing our best to get it renewed every year but we haven't been able to find anything saying whether it can be extended.

If you need it to be a different duration, you will need to contact Apple to request a new push certificate, and then install that on the device.

It took me over a week of work to get the certificates right, but if you've ever had any issues with push notifications, it's worth the effort to learn the best way to setup your certificates. What should I consider? To be honest, I wasn't able to create a successful push notification setup without carefully reading through Apple's documentation. It is very well written and very good at explaining how to do things right. I was able to build out a solution for my app and was quite happy with the result.

In the end, I spent hours reading through the documentation on my Mac and working through the various issues I had. It's worth your time to learn how to set everything up correctly.
