What is GeoTrust used for?
I have a GeoTrust SSL certificate one of my domain names. What exactly is it used for? I'm familiar with encryption, and the concept of public/private keys, and I understand what an SSL certificate is.
However, I don't know how to use it. Can someone explain to me what GeoTrust is used for and what it's used for? Thanks. GeoTrust uses a public key infrastructure (PKI) model of security. The certificate for your site doesn't actually contain the private key, but instead it contains information about how to get the private key from a central location.
The GeoTrust SSL certificates are distributed to GeoTrust by their customers in the form of a certificate request. When you ask for the certificate, they will then go out to the Certificate Authority and obtain a copy of the certificate from them. The CA signs the certificate and returns it to GeoTrust. The certificate will be checked to ensure that it is valid and the private key has not been compromised. If all is good, the CA will return the certificate to GeoTrust, which will then sign the certificate and return it to you.
When the certificate expires, or when you need to update the certificate, you can ask the CA to issue a new certificate. They will do this as long as you have a valid payment method, since the cost of maintaining the PKI is their main business.
When the certificate is active, it is used to verify the authenticity of the site and the data that goes back and forth between the client and the server. This also works with other security features like IP address blocking, which prevents anyone except the site's owner from accessing the site's data.
Is GeoTrust part of DigiCert?
I've read somewhere a while ago that GeoTrust was absorbed by DigiCert, and that GeoTrust as a brand name was part of DigiCert as well.
Does this still hold true, or are GeoTrust certs no longer being generated through DigiCert? Thanks. Dave. This forum requires Javascript to be enabled to post topics. There are two separate services here - Geotrust Validation services where you can pay to check the validity of one of your certificates, and Digicert which manages your certificate signing authority and all of your certificates.Geotrust is not a certsigning partner for Digicert customers so they cannot sign certificates for you. Geotrust Validation (formerly Geotrust Trust Services): This service is aimed at commercial sites who want to be able to offer their consumers the ability to validate the authenticity of the web site address displayed in a browser window.
While this service may seem to be aimed at providing a secure way for the user to verify a website's existence, it is important to understand that the geotrust validation process is completely independent of the content of the website. We check only to make sure that the public DNS records identify the correct Internet domain name. Because of this, it is up to each website owner to decide how to provide validation to its users: for example, you might use your own web servers, or send them a short email; you might display the link to a check for existence button on the current webpage. The only requirement is that, once the site visitor clicks the button and returns to the original web page, the user receives the same result as would have happened if that web page had been loaded initially. If the verification checks out OK, the web page appears to be verified by Geotrust.
The Geotrust validation system: Verified sites appear in the form ' where xxx is the ID number for the verified site. This format allows you to display the site in a standard html anchor tag, but if you wish to use javascript you will need to include an additional header line that gives the ID of the verified site
What is a GeoTrust certificate?
GeoTrust certificates are digital security documents that provide an assurance of trust to web visitors.

Is GeoTrust good?
I've been doing web security for well over 5 years now, and even though I don't consider myself a reputable authority, I still get asked quite a lot of questions about GeoTrust.
Some of those questions just make me sad, but that post is meant to help answer them! Do you need it? If you ask people why they buy SSL, usually the best reason in their head is that it protects the data that you're transmitting through the web (and possibly the rest of your website) so you don't expose sensitive information like credit card numbers, social security number, or some other kind of sensitive data. So it definitely has some merit for websites where the customers are sending back that sort of information.
But that's a pretty narrow niche, as there are many sites out there that simply offer content or other non-sensitive data which cannot be protected by an SSL certificate. Websites like blog post repositories and image hosting sites, for example. Or really, any site whose sensitive information is being shown purely for aesthetic purposes - say, a social networking profile, or any website where people pay to view video. And while I can't speak for the other two points, I'd suspect that most people who ask about the benefits of GeoTrust think they need to protect themselves against someone else's mistake, not because they have something to hide.
If this analysis rings true, then it would be very unwise to use SSL to protect your blog's images, or even if you want to avoid showing sensitive data which could potentially be seen from the outside (if you do this for purely aesthetic reasons, then you'll probably be fine, but most people aren't aware of this difference - or don't know what to look for). That means the only valid use case for an SSL certificate is a site that transmits sensitive information, because if you want to use one to protect images or something like that, then you're just wasting money - your SSL certificate won't actually stop anyone accessing the information anyway.
