Why can't I see attributes in Active Directory?
Ok, I've been a Windows Server Admin for many years.
In the past when I have had to manage some AD environments, I would use ADSIEDIT to look around at things that might help.
But that used to work just fine. Now that I'm using my Surface Pro tablet, ADSIEDIT no longer works, so I want to see what attributes in Active Directory I have. Using Active Directory Users and Computers, I see that I do have some attributes that are available. But I can't seem to get to any of them. What am I doing wrong?
The reason ADSIEDIT is not working on newer versions of Windows is because the Active Directory Schema Viewer does not have the schema loaded. You need to load it first. Here's how to do that:
Open "AD Connections and Import" via the Administrative Tools tab of. The Start Menu. (The one with the gear icon.)
Select Browse Local Server. Type the name of your server, hit Enter. Click Browse. Select the directory you want to browse. Click OK.
You may need to change the directory from servernamerootad to servernameroot or you can browse to your local machine, right-click > properties. Once you have ADSIEDIT, go back to the Connections and Import and click the Load button to load the schema into ADSIEDIT. The schema viewer should show you all your users and groups, along with their attributes.
What is the ADUC attribute tab?
The Attribute tab on the ADUC window contains settings for the current display.
It contains three main areas: Attribute Settings. Display Settings. Report Settings. The attribute settings area contains several fields to configure how attributes are displayed and filtered. You can filter attributes in many ways, including in: By attribute group. By attribute type. By attribute property. By attribute status. By attribute name. Within the attribute group area, you can set the following values: Filter by Attribute Group. Display Options. This is a list of all the attribute groups. You can select or deselect attribute groups to display on the display. To remove a group, select the checkbox next to the group name and click Remove.
Display On Display. When enabled, the attribute group is displayed on the display. Display On Report. When enabled, the attribute group is displayed on the report. Display On Email. When enabled, the attribute group is displayed on the email. Filter By Attribute Group. This is a list of all the attributes that are in the attribute group. When a group is selected, attributes in that group are displayed.
To select a specific attribute, click its name. To select multiple attributes, hold down the Ctrl key (PC) or Cmd key (Mac) while clicking each attribute. You can deselect attributes by selecting their names and pressing the Ctrl key (PC) or Cmd key (Mac).
This list contains all of the attributes that are in the attribute group. Selecting one of the attributes from the list will show its details.
Name. Description. Use this field to set filters for the attribute. You can filter by attribute name, status type, and property.
In the Filter by Attribute field, type a filter. The Filter By Attribute field can contain any of the following filters: Attribute Status: Set the filter to show attributes with the specified status. Attribute Type: Set the filter to show attributes with the specified type.
