Where did Antonio Vivaldi live throughout his life?

Antonio Vivaldi's name lives on in two places: The little village of San Pietro di Castello, not far from Venice, in northern Italy; and an English town near London which calls itself 'Vivaldi Valley'.

But the composer lived and worked for most of his career in a part of the Veneto which has now become inseparable from his name. His father - one Antonio Nicolini - a doctor of the same name who had been appointed to the medical staff of Venice's San Pietro Hospital as chief physician some years before the son's birth, but now died when the boy was only a few months old.

San Pietro - his parents' only home throughout the first part of his life - stands on a steep wooded hillside overlooking a bend in the Brenta river some distance below the Piave, and above Maser's water mills. It is here that Vivaldi is said to have met the young English courtier Richard Brinsley Sheridan who had become a friend of the Nicolini family, although Sheridan has himself told several different versions of the tale. One has him playing on the violin in concert with his friend while in a garden in San Pietro and Vivaldi listening; another, to Sheridan playing in a local tavern without anyone listening to anything but the song being sung.

In any event, the young boy soon made his own contribution to the musical life of San Pietro. In 1716 he was enrolled as a chorister in the Choir of San Petronio - which had been founded by a merchant called Andrea Marescalchi in 1593 with the aim of giving poor children training for service at the great church in Venice where (at that time) the Pope held his conclave. Marescalchi was well known to local music-lovers and provided an important base for local musicians in San Pietro's choir: The earliest record in the choir's archives contains a reference to Marescalchi's death in December 1598, but by that date Antonio had already emerged as a virtuoso player. A manuscript note (now preserved in Vienna) from c. 1700 mentions a musician called Giacomo Marescalchi - presumably his uncle - who died of 'the plague' three years earlier.

Rome, Italy. In April of 2025, the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero published an article about Vivaldi's travels and work habits. It is the most exhaustive biography of the composer to date, based on extensive interviews with his family and friends, and written by the author Francesca Azzopardi, a scholar at the University of Pisa.

It is also surprising. Until now, we knew very little about his life. Vivaldi, after all, lived before the Internet, and the most common story we had heard was that he was a monk. If he really did live in Rome, as the article suggests, then he must have had to move to live in the city, even if it was only for a few years.

The story begins at the beginning of the 18th century. Vivaldi is born in Venice, the son of a painter and a violinist who taught him to play the violin from the age of 5. In 1703, the family moves to Milan, where he begins studies at the Jesuit university there. In 1708, his father dies, leaving his entire estate to his son. Vivaldi is allowed to study music under the professor of counterpoint (an organist, bassist and singer), Nicola Porpora. He receives lessons in violin and composition. This is how Vivaldi becomes a great musician in a short time. Porpora gives him important commissions for church organs, and Vivaldi writes his first masterpiece, The Four Seasons, at the age of 26.

Vivaldi works in Milan until 1715, when he goes to Bologna, another center of culture in the north of Italy. He publishes three more works, including the famous Seasons, and he continues to write. The death of his mother in 1723 causes him to return to Venice, where he remains until 1728, when he returns to Milan. This is when the true history of Vivaldi begins. At the age of 35, he signs the contract with the court of the Duke of Milan, to teach him to play the organ. For five years he gives concerts at the court, and his fame grows. Then he travels to Rome, to teach the court of the Pope, but he stays only a few months, since he does not want to be involved with the court, and feels lost in a city where he is unknown.
