Can OpenVPN track your activity?

We get asked about OpenVPN quite often.

Unfortunately, it's impossible to say that a VPN service doesn't monitor or store your data. Many of them have no idea if they do or not, and others are completely clueless about their privacy policy. Here is our take on the whole issue, in a bit more detail than most sites do, for better or worse:

1) Why should I care? There is a huge range of reasons why you'd want to do this. We'll list a few of the more popular ones here: If you're using a VPN to protect your internet activity, especially on public WiFi networks, then you definitely want to know. It is common for people to use public WiFi without knowing that their IP address is being logged.

As a consumer, you need to know which VPN service is likely to be the least creepy. Some people even think that VPNs are always "good", others only when used on specific services, such as file sharing.

If you're doing online banking with a credit card, you'd probably want to know. Most governments around the world are trying to make VPN providers report their logs to them. If you have a VPN provider that is logging your data, the authorities will be able to track your location at the click of a button.

People often feel paranoid about all of this. If they've got nothing to hide, then why should they care about such things? For most people, even those who don't care, their activities should be completely anonymous. However, there are plenty of activities that can be linked to a person's identity and address.

2) Which VPN services log my activity? Any service that claims to be completely "secure" is lying. They will always track some of your activity, to prove that they're as "secure" as they claim to be. We believe that it's important to at least have the ability to check what exactly they are doing with your data, and how much they're collecting. Most VPN providers aren't even aware of the information they log, nor can they prove otherwise. In fact, some of them are actively trying to get rid of the log files.

You may not want to read through the full list of services that we've come up with. Instead, go for services that don't keep any logs.

Is OpenVPN a vulnerability?

The 0.2 Release OpenVPN 0.2 is the second stable release of the OpenVPN 2.7 series. In fact, the last few releases have been so stable that it's possible to consider it production ready. So why is this second stable release necessary? Well, as of late, OpenVPN has been getting major updates for both server and client software. OpenVPN is no longer one of the more mature open source projects on the Internet.

What's New in OpenVPN 0. New Features. Client Protocols. In OpenVPN 2.7 there were two new client protocols: PPTP and L2TP. Now there's a new third protocol: DTLS (see the Client Protocols section below for more information).

The other major change is the new user-configuration files. With the new release, OpenVPN now supports user-configuration files instead of the older system of per-server configuration files. This feature gives OpenVPN greater flexibility and is a major step forward in the project.

There are three new client protocols supported by OpenVPN 2.7: PPTP, L2TP, and DTLS. This is an important change for OpenVPN because it allows more flexibility in where you use OpenVPN. The protocol used for client connections is determined at connection time.

DTLS stands for Data Transfer Layer Security and is a common protocol for providing secure communications over TCP/IP. DTLS provides confidentiality, integrity, and authentication.

It is a new protocol in OpenVPN 2. There are some issues with compatibility with older versions of OpenVPN. For instance, the default config file used by OpenVPN may not work with older versions of the protocol.
