How many animated Disney movies have been made?
What's the best?
Which of your favourite Disney Movies (released on a Disney Blu-ray Disc) is the best movie you've seen? Or would you say that there's a best movie amongst all of them? (I would argue, for example, that The Lion King is better than Beauty and the Beast.) So who's the best Walt Disney movie? Let's take a look.
"And the Oscar goes to." It's a bit of a surprise, in fact, because we had assumed that this one would win. But in fact it was the other one, The Lion King that won the '89 Academy Awards. And it has even won awards since. It has the highest per-film box office return of any Disney movie. Of course, being the best, it also has a much higher per-dollar return - and it's the only Disney movie to win Best Picture twice! (The first time in 1994, then again in 2025.)
But what is the best Disney movie? I'd say it's The Lion King. If you ask around and mention it to some other people, they will agree with you. It's the most loved, and the most-seen, Disney movie ever. It's the first film to be released in digital format, and the first to receive an IMAX 3D release. It's the film that was the catalyst for the Lion King franchise and helped make animation a major new industry in the '90s. So what is the best Disney movie? Well, it's The Lion King.
But then again, what is the worst Disney movie? That's tough. There's so many. One of the earliest made by Disney Animation was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In the next 25 years, almost every Pixar and Disney Animation release would include a Disney movie (usually a compilation). But it was the Disney movie made in 1937 that would become the worst. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is the only Disney movie to not win a single Academy Award. It did win Best Animated Short Film, which was good. But it only won one more award. It lost Best Picture to Citizen Kane. The next year, the award went to Gone With the Wind. And that's the end of the story.
What are your opinions? Which Disney movie do you think is the best? I'll also list them below in case you disagree.
What is Disney's 53th animated movie?
A review
Disney is set to bring another classic Disney adventure this Christmas, Pete's Dragon.
With that movie coming up, this past week I decided to watch 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Disney's 53rd feature film. For Disney historians, it's important to note, in 1998, 20,000 Leagues overtook Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs as the 53rd animated feature film for Disney and has yet to appear on any of Disney Channel's top grossing movies. Even though 20,000 Leagues is a bit dated, it still offers up some pretty cool ideas about what Disney animation is about, what it could be if given the opportunity, and why the animation production studio deserves so much attention from the rest of the entertainment industry.
So if you're planning to see Pete's Dragon this year, why not start watching Disney's early animated features instead. It won't take too much time and can only be fun, really.
It goes without saying that Disney features are not all created equal. While I do know what makes each individual Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, or Goofy cartoon worth watching (I even recommend these films, but if you haven't already seen them, then you really need to check out my five top ten list on YouTube.) The thing is though, just because Disney was able to capture the imagination of an entire nation and change the course of popular culture doesn't mean that they are without flaws. There are flaws all over Disney cartoons.
The animation production studio didn't always strive to be perfect, but this lack of perfection was actually the most appealing thing about Disney. Every single cartoon has a unique and memorable feel to it, much more so than their non-animated counterparts. In this article, I want to try to describe just how important this feel is to everyone who watches Disney movies and how I came to recognize that animation productions have never been perfect, but always had a quality that made them stand out.
The animation production studio had this unique no rules mindset that weaved together several different media in a way that no other company at the time could have accomplished.
