Can I still download 3DS games after the eShop closes?

After today's Nintendo Direct, where Nintendo said the eShop will shut down on March 29, and that new Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions won't be available, I was wondering if this means that those who've already paid for 3DS downloads will no longer be able to download any 3DS games on their handheld.

I'm fine with the idea of being locked out of games, but my concern is that new 3DS downloads might still be available on the eShop once it shuts down, or that someone might have forgotten to subscribe and not realize it's closed. Could I still download new games on the eShop when it shuts down and use them in 3DS titles?

You should be able to access new download apps, such as 3DS Emulator. You can find details of all online features via this link, and it seems as if most services will continue to work after the eShop shuts down. It seems like you shouldn't be having any problems accessing download games that you paid for, assuming you pay for 3DS/Wii U titles before the eShop shuts down.

I'd still like to play Super Mario 3D Land and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, but both games are out of stock.

I don't know about you, but I'm getting a little impatient waiting for Nintendo to release the 3DS successor to the 3DS XL. We already know that it'll have two screens, it'll include NFC (Near Field Communication) tech, and it'll have improved motion controls over the original model. Other rumors tell us that we might get a higher-resolution screen, improved batteries, and a 2.2 GHz CPU, which might include dual-core, quad-core, and even octa-core hardware.]

Now it's just a matter of when Nintendo will release it. Rumors about the new model started last year, so it could be that we'll know more in the near future. However, there are still a few things that we don't know about the new hardware. What about the 3DS XL? Will it still have a touch screen?

What's the 3DS XL's battery life like? The battery life is pretty good. Nintendo says that you can play 20 to 25 hours of games per charge, but you'll probably get less.

You'll probably play more than 20 hours if you're on a long plane flight, though. If you're thinking about using a portable console for playing while on the go, then you'll probably need a lot of battery power. A typical day in my life is about 8 to 9 hours, and I sometimes get through a whole day without charging the system. I haven't tried playing Mario Kart 7 or Professor Layton: Miracle Mask on the plane, but I can imagine that they won't make it very far before I need to recharge.

Is 3DS phased out?

I was just watching some of the Nintendo Direct videos and it got me wondering: if Nintendo announced that the 3DS was soon to be phased out, is this a likely scenario?

Or will Nintendo make good on its promise to provide another Nintendo 3DS model within the next two years? Also, any insight into the likelihood of a future 3DS model will also be appreciated! The answer is simple: there's no way. The only way for Nintendo to give them a replacement is to release another Wii U. They can't get rid of the 3DS yet as the hardware is popular. But in 2 years they can release the 4th generation of the 3DS handhelds and have the 3DS continue on. Unless Nintendo has some sort of a miracle, it looks like we'll be talking about the 3DS at least until 2026.

A year from now, who knows. When the next generation of systems come out, Nintendo won't say what is coming or when they are coming, and they'll take a wait and see approach. They can probably get a bit of a head start by releasing the NX in 2026, so we could have a decent amount of time to get used to it and get a taste of what they're offering in the next gen of games and hardware, and even possibly release another 3DS model in the same timeframe as the NX. That, or they'll announce a new system or something in the 2 years between when NX comes out and when NX comes out, and have a similar situation occur as the last round. They'd obviously want more then two years to do so.

I'm pretty sure the rumor about the NX is nothing but that. Nothing confirmed other than a name has been spoken. There is no plan for the 3DS right now, especially considering the fact that they could just start on the next generation already.

What you said was true. It's very rare that Nintendo releases a console so far ahead of it's current predecessor, though. Even though many people believe that a Wii U successor is expected before 2026, we have nothing official saying that yet.

If Nintendo announced that they have plans to start production on a successor to the 3DS, this would be very surprising and I doubt that the Wii U is going to be that successor.

You know, when I was a kid there were so many great games.

Not that there aren't anymore, I just have such fond memories of all the games in that console. And now that I'm older I realize how much of an impact that system had on me. Not just games but the console itself. It was so portable and great looking. If only I'd bought it earlier and it had lasted longer. Anyways, back to the main question: are they still releasing new 3DS games?

Yeah the DS had some pretty good games too, but none really as good as that first one. I hope Nintendo never ever releases a Wii U. That would be absolute evil.

So you'd release something good for the 3DS to make people forget about the Wii U? That would be just plain evil. If anything I just don't trust Nintendo at all to not release their own game for another system. They're good at doing it for other systems though. They've done it many times before. I just don't trust them to never release their own games. That's like telling me "I'm going to sell your house and not give you a dime of change". So yeah, I'm really not trusting them.

Yeah they can be really bad at it too. Some things they just don't do anymore and even some things they started doing a few generations ago that were a complete and utter mess (like the Wii U).

There were actually a handful of good 3rd party games for the 3DS. It wasn't all that bad. That would be my one thing though. We didn't have good games for every year.

3DS is getting better already. The 3DS is still not getting good games but I think it is getting better and getting better as the games get better. I'm surprised and disappointed by this announcement. Hopefully, it is just me.

I was hoping to see more, but am glad they mentioned it.
