It's an important question, because R2-D2 is both a robot and a droid. Some might say he's a little machine. He's a robot, but not just any robot. He's a special kind of robot. He's a mechanic, but also a diplomat, a philosopher, a scientist, and a leader. He is a machine - but he is also a man.

He is the central character in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. And for many, he's the hero of the film, the one who saves the day. R2-D2 isn't just an action figure or a toy. He's a symbol. He's the heart of a larger metaphor. He stands for something. That something, as we'll see, is something very important.

Before we get into the film, though, we need to understand the history of R2-D2. And the reason this history matters, so let's start with the original.

The Original. When Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back was released in 1980, R2-D2 was a new creation. His model had been built in the 1970s, but George Lucas hadn't created him until he was almost finished writing the script for Empire. In the film, R2-D2 is actually programmed with a mission to rescue Princess Leia.

He's supposed to be a protocol droid - meaning that his primary function is to serve and follow orders. But he has an internal capacity for initiative, and through it, for self-reflection. He's programmed to protect his master - who was captured by the empire - and to bring her to safety. The movie tells us that this is the first time he has been given a real purpose, and he believes he should be loyal to that purpose.

That purpose, of course, is to rescue Leia. And as R2-D2 goes to make his way to the princess, he gets into some trouble. When his mission fails, he becomes very upset, as anyone would be who has to leave an important mission half-done.
