What protocol does Remote Desktop use?

Is Microsoft Remote Desktop TCP or UDP?

I'm trying to make a UDP/TCP connection from my Windows XP machine to a remote machine running Windows Server 2026.

I've been trying to get it working for over a month now and I'm getting frustrated.

My application connects to the remote machine using Remote Desktop Connection and then sends the screen to a third-party application that reads the screen and does some processing. The screen is sent to the third-party application as a "Microsoft PowerPoint" document (I have the screen set to "Microsoft PowerPoint").

When I try to connect to the remote machine, I get a "Remote Desktop Protocol Service Not Available" error. I've been researching for over a month now and can't find anything helpful. I've tried installing the Remote Desktop Gateway service on both the client and the server. I've tried setting the computer to allow connections and not allow connections. I've tried using TCP and UDP. I've tried running the third-party application on my local machine and remotely. I've tried setting the default protocol to TCP and UDP. Nothing works.

The only thing that I haven't tried yet is uninstalling the Remote Desktop Gateway service. I'm not sure if I should do that or not, since I'm not even sure what that service does.

Can anyone help me figure out how to get this to work? If there's no way to do it, is there any other way to send the screen from my local machine to the remote machine? Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol. This article describes the Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) version 5.0, which is the newest release of the RDP protocol.

The following table provides an overview of the major changes between the previous release of RDP and RDP version 5. New feature. Description. New Remote Session Object (RSO). Provides a new abstraction for sessions and session objects. The session object can be used to get access to the session's information and resources.

New remote session types. The new remote session types provide for more flexibility in the management of RDP sessions. These new session types are more efficient than their predecessors because they allow you to specify session properties without changing the session object's properties.

The following sections describe the new features in more detail. In addition to this, there are a number of new features available in RDP version 5.

What is RDP and how does it work?

RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) is a protocol used to share graphical user interfaces (GUIs) from a remote computer to another. It allows you to share a full-screen or windowed desktop session on your computer over the network with a client. RDP enables users to access and use the applications and resources on another computer.

Using RDP. RDP lets you share the display and mouse and keyboard of another computer with a client, in a manner similar to sharing a file or printer on a network. In RDP, however, the files, applications and resources are shared over a network.

RDP is generally used to connect to a remote desktop server. This means that you must be connected to the Internet for the client application to function. You can't use RDP on a private network. However, you can use it for accessing a file server or remote printer.

Note: RDP is not installed by default. You need to install the RDP Client, which is free, or the RDP server, which is not.

Steps to connect to a remote desktop. Open the RDP client application. On a Windows computer, you can find the RDP client in the Start menu under Programs or on the Start menu. On a Mac, the RDP client is called Remote Desktop Connection. In the Applications folder, find the RDP client. You can find the RDP client in the Applications folder on a Mac. Click the RDP client icon to start the RDP client. Enter the IP address or hostname of the computer you want to connect to in the IP address or hostname box. If you're connected to a router, you'll see your local network and other computers on the network. Click the Open button to log into the remote computer. The Remote Desktop Connection window opens and displays a remote desktop session. The remote desktop session shows a desktop environment that looks like the computer you're connecting to.

Click Connect. The connection process may take several seconds or minutes depending on the bandwidth of the connection between the computers. Once the connection is established, you will see the Remote Desktop Connection window with a progress bar.
