What is the best API gateway for microservices?

Today's post is the first of a two-part series on API gateways and the future of microservices.

In this first part, we are going to focus on the differences between API gateways and why you might want to use them in a microservice architecture.

What Is an API Gateway? It's not a gate that requires an identification, it is a gateway. It is something that you connect your network to. Your service is accessible by an IP address and any other data protocol that your network requires. Today, the two most common methods are REST APIs and gRPC. But there is a large set of other technologies that also fit into this category such as HTTP/2 over Websockets. The API gateway was born when we started building APIs to create these gateways.

Today, an API gateway is used to secure resources, to manage multiple services or APIs, to monitor their health, detect bottlenecks, and even expose them to other clouds or cloud stacks. We can also apply authentication, authorization, and caching to those services. The API gateway can also be integrated with other tools like monitoring or security solutions.

The reason why I am writing about API gateways is because most of us will use them today. In the past, we used web servers. Nowadays, most of use application servers or other platforms that are able to run those servers. And for a lot of us, the biggest challenge we face is deploying those applications that run on those servers. We have to think of how we can deploy them to those servers. The API gateway allows you to decouple what is called the upstream API from the application server or platform.

So, we can decouple the API from where it is running. Today, we use an API gateway that is hosted in a cloud. So, what do we use a cloud for? So, basically, we host things there for convenience. This means that we want to have a public IP address for the upstream. With an API gateway, it provides a public IP address and some other benefits, which we will get to. We want to be able to scale our services. So, with an API gateway, we only need one instance per endpoint. It's very easy to scale. We don't need many instances and the services are decoupled from each other.

Do AWS APIs cost money?

When people find out that AWS has APIs, they want to know what's involved.

In the past we've written up documentation for these API calls, and we did it right and everything was explained quite clearly. Today, we're going to try to provide an update for the newer API calls, but without too much detail as we already have a rather long list of existing APIs.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) provides several different service offerings for developers. We have many APIs and SDKs. Some are more or less limited in their abilities and scope. Some are only available in certain regions. Some are free, some charge. A few provide more data that is used for pricing calculations than others, and the pricing model varies. Here are our recommendations.

AWS APIs Cost money. AWS offers different service offerings with varying limits. The more you use the service, the higher the pricing gets. You do not have to pay to have access to most AWS services, but if you want to make the most use of what they offer and to gain the most benefit from their capabilities, you should consider paying for the products. With all services offered by Amazon, you get 100 free usage months. After that, the monthly charges will vary depending on the services you use and how you use them. We can't go into those details today, but these pages will give you an overview of the various plans that you can purchase.

We do not recommend relying on public cloud computing with your own money; if you do you'll end up with expensive servers you'll never use. It's best to get the right level of services at the right price. AWS prices are dynamic and change over time.70 / 1,000 GB-hour of processing power. The pricing changes, though, so the cost per unit hour should be checked.

Note. The AWS APIs cost money. They do not come for free. The pricing varies for each API call. If you want to use our samples, you can find them under the Samples chapter in the Apierver . The pricing is not always included in the code, so if you cannot find the cost, you should take a look at the API docs. However, some API calls can also be used in Java applications. For instance, EC2 supports Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) .

What is the most widely used API gateway?

If you're like me, you use many different APIs and you want to be able to call them from your code.
