Can a QA tester work from home?
Yes, and I'm going to show you how.
When I started my career in QA, there were few options to work from home. I had a family of my own and I wanted to raise them but at the same time I needed to get a job so I could feed them.
I was still in college and since I had a lot of free time on my hands I had a lot of time to look for QA jobs. In the early days of QA the majority of the jobs were physical, like testing out an operating system or hardware, so I spent some time on Craigslist looking for software jobs.
I didn't find much but I did come across an ad from a software company called Pivotall that was looking for people to test their software products. So I sent them a CV and a cover letter and got an interview. I went to their office, did the coding challenge, passed it and got the job.
From there I moved on to other companies and it took me about 3-4 months to get a job. It was pretty miserable as most companies in QA weren't really hiring people and if you didn't get a job fast you would have to leave the industry.
I didn't want to leave but what was I going to do with my family? So I kept going back to companies looking for more work but found very little. This changed when I met a recruiter who told me about a job at a company called Cylance and the company looked for people to test their software. I did some research on the company and I found that Cylance worked on security software, they were big and had over 100 million dollars in sales a year. So I went to an interview and got the job. I got the job right after graduating from college.
It was a dream come true. I loved the job and the culture and I thought I had a good chance at getting promoted. But then it came out that Cylance had been hacking into user accounts and sending them spam emails. The company had to let go of over 250 employees due to the scandal.
Luckily for me I had quit my job at the time and so I kept my job at Cylance but I was let go just a few months later.
How to get into QA testing with no experience?
Hey guys.
I'm new to the forum and I'm a CS student who's really looking to get into QA and help develop websites. It seems I have more talent at writing code than at writing tests, and I'm wondering if anyone here can give me some suggestions on how to get into it?
This job requires you to actually be able to read the source code and break it (sometimes in ways no one but the programmers can understand). While I love to write code, don't take that too literally. For example, just because I can break an app doesn't mean I can write the automated tests to cover all the cases. In fact, many times we have to come up with a test based on the broken code the programmer just gave us to work with. We end up rewriting their work because there's no way to test it properly.
Basically, I'd say that this requires an understanding of what a site does as well as the code. And if you do have to build such a site from scratch, you'll need more than just programming knowledge to do it well.
I would love to say that I can answer your question, but I'm not an expert at all. Just like everyone else on the board, I have no idea what you want to do.
But I do know that if you were really serious about wanting to make websites for a living, you should learn how to design websites before writing code. It's amazing how much better it feels to write a website for someone than to look at the code someone else has written! To do a good job at testing, you have to be willing to think like the programmers who are writing the code. There's a lot of technical aspects that they have to consider when writing code, as well as some business-related stuff that they have to consider, too. Sometimes they have to work with other people or even different departments within the company, so you're going to have to be willing to switch off your own ideas about how things work in order to understand how the rest of the team is thinking about them. Even programmers who aren't writing tests have to be very comfortable with their own assumptions and opinions, otherwise they may find that people will always ask them questions they can't answer simply because they don't understand the logic behind it.
Also, there are a lot of details involved in getting ready for testing.
